You'll have to forgive me for listening to the American Medical Association and American Lung Association over anecdotal stories from the internet.

I'm not taking a shot at you shanez, I hear what you're saying. But don't blame me if I don't believe anything fed to me by a Government Agency or agencies funded by companies/people whose interests run counter to my own.

With a country the size of the US you could never get people to comply and turn in anything. And they don’t have the resources to come get it.
They can do it piecemeal.

Statements like 'you'll pry [whatever] from my cold dead hands' are very ebullient, but in the praxis, how many are really willing to put their actions where they put their mouth (or their keyboard)? Sure, there are mavericks everywhere and a minority willing to say 'hooray for the outlaw!' as in that Winger's song, but again, when breaking the law regulations can put one's loved ones in jeopardy, or make one lose job, savings, income, home, or whatever else they threaten to take away for non-compliance, most will fold, begrudgingly and screaming bloody murder, but fold nonetheless.

They've ways, and they've time.

What they would do is first outlaw internet sales. Then as more and more people drop out of smoking raise the taxes up even more. Now your shit selection of tobacco is way overpriced. Next, pass laws to make it illegal to smoke anywhere.

you see where I’m going with this. Enough steps and there will either be no one or very few left. With none to replace them. Who wants to start pipe smoking when it’s exorbitantly expensive with incredibly limited selection?

Since being diagnosed with a 'terminal illness', I've done a lot of research.
Medical organisations such as the ones you mentioned are all a part of the Medical Industry who receive a lot of funding from Big pHarma.
Even to this day Big pHarma bribes ... er, or should I say 'donates' millions every year to political parties.
Big pHarma will do what it can to keep any natural cure away from the public because unless they can patent a product to make outrageous profit, they're simply not interested in a cure.

Big pHarma - Profit before people.

A good example of the power Big pHarma exerts is how the brilliant researcher Dr Royal Rife was treated back in the 1930s. He was curing cancer patients who had been through conventional treatment then sent home to die.
Dr Rifes proved time and again that his methods worked yet how many have died from cancer since then?
Why hasn't every oncology ward got a Rife Machine? Because there's little profit in cure.

The 12 Buergers patients I've known who put their faith in their doctors and the medical industry are all dead.
One can either learn to think for themselves or put their faith in their doctors.
Personally I'd prefer to survive by learning to think for myself.

Dealing with an illness that doctors just don't seem to fix, or care about really gets us doing lotsa reading, doesn't it?

Cancer is normally the big talk of the town, but that the medical establishment is in cahoots with Big Pharma can be seen in other areas too. Take the famous GERD (gastroesophageal acid reflux), a condition that I've had for over 15 years and has never been properly treated. The doctors' "solution"? Take proton pump inhibitors for life!
(WTF??? ? Yes, that's what I said too.) If you refuse or object, you get an angry scolding from your physician/specialist –a fire and brimstone tirade in which he'll threaten you with a painful death from cancer if you don't do what he says.

I wager you'd face instant banishment from the august presence of such an erudite 'health' practitioner if you were to bring up any (or all) of the nasty side effects of such 'medication':

among which is a 60% greater chance of developing Barrett's Esophagus—one of the very conditions they are trying to prevent!! Again, WTF?!

Hell, even Big Pharma prints on the labels of the PPIs that they should not be taken longer than 14 days; yet your 'doctor' is emphatically telling you to take them till you die! Again and again, WTF??!!

Of course, the indication "if your problems persist consult your physician" covers Big Pharma quite well: if the medicaster prescribes them then it's safe to ignore the warning on the box, right? Safe my arse, but a perpetual PPI prescription is about the only way your 'doctor' will treat your GERD. Oh, that and the mandate to immediately stop any and all consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and coffee.

Welcome to Nanny State Australia.
The cheapest pack of 20 cigarettes is now $23.50.
An old favourite, Peter Stuyvesant, is now $32.50.
Amphora Full Aroma 50g is $112.

There's another tax hike [ I think it's 15%] to come.

The North Sydney Council proposed that smoking tobacco be prohibited anywhere in public within council boundaries [not sure if that proposal passed]

George Orwell warned us about Big Brother.
And Newspeak = political correctness.

You too huh? I've been taking Pepcidine [Famotidine] for around 30 years.
The link that you gave is scary stuff.
Fortunately Pepcidine has caused me no problems [touch wood]
It's the PPIs that followed that are causing more harm than good.

Then there's Statin drugs for cholesterol. Studies have found that they are basically useless and that they increase heart attack risk in certain patients, yet they're still widely prescribed.

Prednisone is a steroid that has some benefit for short term use, yet I've known dozens of patients who've been on it for years. It visibly ages people, destroys the liver and hastens death.
Every person I've known who was on Prednisone long term has died.

My personal favourite is Lyrica, an anti-epileptic that doctors are handing out like candy at Halloween.
Lyrica has nasty side-effects, ruins the liver and sudden cessation can kill.

Last year I spent one week in hospital. Talking to one patient he said he had no idea why he was prescribed Lyrica.
Making a point of asking others I found that over half the patients were given Lyrica for no apparent reason.
One lady asked why and was told "Just in case you get nerve pain." Wisely she refused it.
The doctors are using it as a prophylactic cure-all.

Just a little research reveals the dangers of these drugs and the incorrect prescribing by doctors yet few patients are willing to stand up to their doctors.

"Fire and brimstone tirade"? Absolutely. My surgeon was an aggressive and abusive arsehole. I've heard way too many stories of patients being treated exactly how you describe when they dare to question their specialist.
Their attitude is 'Me brilliant doctor. You ignorant patient.'
Fortunately my GPs have been great.

Many of these widely prescribed pHarmaceuticals are hundreds of times more dangerous than tobacco. Even more dangerous than chemically laden cigarettes.

I wish this were true. My wife, a very pro-marijuana cancer scientist who uses marijuana regularly to both treat pain and recreationally, reviews all of the published research on marijuana every quarter to see if there are any directly positive effects on cancer treatment. It really helps in dealing with the symptoms of cancer, but not with the treatment of the cancer itself. This sort of research moves so quickly that anything pre-2010 is really just contextual, not worth actual citation.

Again, I wish there were legitimate studies that showed marijuana to be helpful in the actual cancer treatment, but it just isn't. Saying "marijuana cures cancer" while citing those studies is simply bullshit.

Not attacking BROBS here, he's just posting this as a tongue in cheek thing. The problem is that some read this and completely buy it lol.

I don't think it would impact me much unless it really drove tobacco prices way (black market). Then my cellar might be worth enough for me to sell it off.

I'll never understand the mindset of people who disparage tobacco but advocate for weed. Weed has only a tiny fraction of bonafide studies vs the quantity of studies done on tobacco and its effects. It's still way too early to be touting the benefits of weed (other than reduced nausea and increased food intake). Even if weed is ultimately proven to not cause cancer it still damages the lungs.

I think you DO understand it. Not as much is known, prohibition failed, pot is being legalized, and now more will be learned. There's already new evidence to increased lung damage from smoking marijuana, in part because people hold it in their lungs to get the most absorption.

There's evidence that it decreases testosterone, and will make you gents grow tits. I've seen pictures of some of you and now this thought is giving me some awful visuals. And evidence that it decreases memory, I think, I can't remember.

Lastly, if tobacco were to become illegal, which is highly unlikely as prohibitions always fail, while "death by a thousand cuts" succeeds over time, I'd enjoy my cellar, which is more than ample for my needs. My consumption wouldn't change, though I might smoke more of my English blends now and less of the Virginias.

Meh, I'd buy all the tobacco I could get my hands on and then proceed to smoke it and then proceed to not care when I run out ...I might even try my hand at growing some while smoking my supply. Seems pretty daunting to start from seed and end up with something you'd wanna smoke, but at the same time I like a challenge and enjoy new hobbies. I also don't find myself to be very dependent on Nicotine, which helps.

Really have to lol at the fact that 'the other leaf' comes up every time a thread like this is posted, yet people find abstaining from it to be virtuous ...these natural products should be legal and regulated for sale, and you should be able to grow your own. I don't like the culture around the other stuff but that's honestly a product of the black market more than the stuff you pull outta the ground. I digress...wanna tread lightly with that subject and stay in the 'accepted topics' lane.

I would remind you how the Bundy Ranch standoff ended. A few patriots stood down the US Government. The Revolutionary War only had the backing of 3% of the people in the colonies. Throughout history around the world, a few have stood against what they feel is wrong. Do not make the mistake of underestimating people who are passionate. A few can do great things.
That being said...I have a large cellar and live far away from any neighbors. Most of my friends wouldn't pay too much attention to any ruling they don't agree with either. Nosey people who know what's best for me is one of the many reasons I won't live in a big city.

I've not heard of one other person here who grows tobacco.
The penalties for growing tobacco here in Nanny State Australia for personal use are harsher than for growing weed.

Quite an interesting answer to me, there. Thanks. I did read an article about homegrown being sold on the black market, and yes, they mixed it with commercial sometimes because it was so bad. That ammonia smell sounds like the smell of uncured or partially cured tobacco. Anyway, it was quite interesting to hear what you have seen there. Thanks again.

Sorry to hear about your illness. I'm glad you are getting some relief from pot. It's a crime that medical use is not legal worldwide. I'm 64 now, I've had Neurontin and Lyrica prescribed numerous times. No thank you. When I'm a bit older I'm hoping I can avoid big pharma's screwing and grow my own medicine legally.
