3 blends that 3 years plus of age have transformed them into favs for me. Sir John's Flake Virginia, MB HH Pure Virginia and Capstan Gold. MB Virginia Flake is edging up there.
Can’t go wrong with the first two, but gold has yet to ring my bell. Been smoking on a 2013 RR tin for about two years now and still have half of it. My appreciation for lighter VAs has increased of late though, so I should revisit it.

Have yet to try the flake version though. Maybe that’ll do it. I have a 2018 tin kicking around in some nook or cranny.

It will come as no surprise that my favorite blend for 2022 is C&D Visions of Cellulose.
I’ve tried a lot of blends for the first time this year, but none that were new for 2022:

H&H WhiteKnight, GLP Gaslight, and Watch City Rouxgaroux all rang my bell from the get-go.

C&D Visions of Celephais was a “sounds ridiculous, but what the hell, I’ll try it someday” item, then I got it from my Secret Santa! Liking it was probably my biggest surprise of the year. Yeah, grape is a weird choice of topping. But I find myself able to enjoy it simultaneously as a silly fruity aromatic, and as a blend of some serious tobaccos. That it takes a match and stays lit really well just adds to the appeal.

Two stand out, neither exactly new. First was the 2021 Cringle Flake after it had been in the tin for a few months - was like a different much richer blend.
The other was opening a jar of 2019 HU Director’s Cut, that had been rendered a so so smoke by adding a ton of DFK to it in place of the perique. A couple years later the DFK has settled down and isn’t drowning out everything else and this version of Director’s Cut is pretty good. The current version is different from the 2019 of which I bought a kilo and was considering tossing in the trash. K&K reduced the amount of DFK in newer batches, which is an improvement.

I’m done buying so I don’t try the new stuff being offered, unless it’s a sample.

My smoke of the year was my only bowl of mccranies red ribbon from 2012. The pop of the tin, the smell off it, the perfect moisture content, the amazing flavor, all in all a great smoke. I'm going to slowly savor the 2 ounces I have in 2023.

For what is available now my smokes of the year where fresh HU Janneman Flake and Solani ABF which aired out for a year.

My 2022 standouts:

1. 1792 Flake - Has been close to 10 years since I last bought a tin and this has to be one of my new favorites.

2. Aberrant - This blend is like adding a little something extra in flavor to ODF while still being something different enough to standout. Glad I stocked up on this one.

3. Cringle Flake 2022 - I can’t speak on previous releases as this was my first, but man is this so good. I too enjoy pure VAs but they can get boring. This edged out Carolina Red Flake for me this year because the perique adds that extra layer of complexity to older aged red Virginias.

I’m just happy to see it’s 2022 and there are still blending houses supplying us with a premium leaf to put in our pipes.

What’s your favorite new blend that dropped in 2022? Or if you prefer just an old one you just seemed to jam on this year. What was your “Blend of the Year” for 2022? For me:

Seattle Pipe Club Hogshead.

Runner up: Per Jensen Whimsical

I guess Sutliff just has my number lately 🤷‍♂️
Hogshead for me too. Became a regular part of my rotation. Give Me Liberty, on the other hand, was just okay. But Hogshead is a really great smoke.

New in 2022 Winner for me was Wilke Butterscotch Black Cavendish. I’m new to pipe game and Im finding I enjoy these types of blends a little more than others.

I tried and jarred a lot of the other 2022 drops mentioned in other posts and they were good smokes. But Wilke B-scotch was love at first light.

My jam though for past few months has been anything from KBV. Flying Dutchmen flek most recently.
