Just curious as to how many people would, out of politeness, not bid on an item you knew someone else wanted. I have something coming up Monday and I cannot outbid you determined collectors with deep pockets. The general population is bad enough, but YOU crazy people scare me. I don't have a lot of money and rarely get "permission" to spend more than 20 bucks. In fact, I have never spent more than 22 dollars, including shipping, on a pipe; Even my beloved Kaywoodie and KBB's. I know the almighty dollar speaks loudest in this capitalist society and some believe this kind of might makes right. I'm just wondering how much sway a new-ish Brother of The Briar may hold in this community. Please kick me to the curb... gently. :puffy:

If someone asks for an opinion on an item up for auction I would not bid against them. Otherwise, how would we know who we are bidding against?

After many years I am now fortunate enough to be able to spend what I want on a pipe. If I were biding it would probably be a more expensive pipe.
Perhaps you might want to give the listing and let others keep out of your way.

My estate budget is similar to yours. If you know someone on the board who collects similar pipes as you there's nothing wrong with sending them a PM and letting them your intentions and coordinating your bids.

If there is an item you are interested in buying at auction on eBay, why on God's green earth would you let anyone know which auction that was? That would increase the chances of someone else being interested who otherwise may not have even known the auction even existed.
I have also seen posts where someone posted a link to an auction they are bidding on and have asked others not to bid. The height of poor taste. My advice would be to keep your mouth shut and take care of business.

Unless it was something I am specifically looking for them no I would not bid if one of my friends wanted it. Right now I have a narrow field of pipes I am looking for, so I am pretty sure you are safe.

I humbly ask those who care to, to not bid Monday between the hours of 9-10am Pacific and noon-1pm Eastern on an item containing more than one pipe.

I think forum members bidding on the same pipe happens everyday. I do communicate with friends who collect the same make or style I go after.
The bottom line is, If you want one bad enough you'll just have to pay the piper.

There have been occasions when I was aware that some other forum member was interested in a pipe so I didn't bid but I have to say I don't think that does much to suppress the price as there are a lot of non members also bidding. When it is another member one thing you do know for certain is that the pipe in question will be expensive (relatively speaking) because people here are passionate about their pipe choices and are often willing to spend a little more to get what they're after.

In hopes of curtailing this I posted the link for two seconds, read pipestud's comment, then deleted it.

I suppose if it was something I wanted badly enough I'd bid on it even though another forum member was bidding. Whoever wants it the most will win it and I hope there would be no hard feelings either way, that's just the way auctions work.

I've spent my allotted quota this month, so no worries here, but I would think it's against the spirit of an auction and kind of a dis-service to the seller to ask.
