If anyone tells me about a pipe they are bidding on, I will cut their throats even if I don't like the pipe. I just want to see people whine and cry about a pipe they lost out on, nothing more fun than that.
jesse has been helping me out on Barling's, if he told me he wanted to bid on a specific one, of course I would let him think I won't bid against him. Once I win the pipe, I will post it here to rub salt in the wound. This is how I roll, so deal with it.
Ok maybe that was a tad harsh. If I know someone from here wants a certain pipe, I will back off, other wise, all is fair in love and ebay.

I always try to discern what pipes cigrmaster is bidding on and then bid those pipes up. It is hard to stomache bidding on such crappy pipes, but I feel it is a duty I owe to the pipe smoking community.

I would. That is what an auction is all about. Raising the best price possible for the seller. I would not do this for any spiteful reasons however. I would refrain way more than I would. I would only do this if it was for something I really wanted and or had been looking for for a long time. I probably would lose anyhow as I am an orthodox tight arse.
One thing I would not do though is post the pipe I am interested in on a public forum and so consequently advertising meat to the wolves

Yes, it is an auction. It's not fair to the seller plus someone else may swoop in and buy it. If you find something good don't be asking for opinions. Grow a pair and make a decision on your own.

I suggest the best pipes to Harris for the simple reason that he never takes my suggestions. Leaves the field clear for me. I don't worry about Peck. He's still buying those paper mâché pipes from Parks and Kurushu. If he ever develops any standards, I'll deal with him then.

Believe it or not, this forum isn't the pipe world, so many other bidders will not be members, and will not care if a member is bidding. But as I have no need to do sellers any favors, after all, sellers aren't here to do me any, I have no proble with declining to possibly bid up a price unnecessarily. People often PM me about pipes up for auction. Everybody is straightforward about it.

If you are a bidder your objective to get the item as cheaply as possibly. If the seller, your are trying for as much money as possible. There is no "fair" at auctions. Each party is hoping to score at the expense of the other.
As sable points out I doubt that a majority of bidders are members of this forum. So any sort of gentleman's agreement is probably worthless with so many others involved. And, the one agreeing not to bid is the big loser if the item is one he covets.

Hey, mayfair, did you get the pipe(s)?
I will know by this time tomorrow. It doesn't end until early Monday afternoon Eastern time. I will post the results win or lose. :)

Oh well, it was a nice thought. The price jumped too high at the end for me. I didn't really like the pipe styles anyway. The rack would have been half empty, necessitating the purchase of more pipes. It didn't match the drapes. I would have had to dust it all the time. The cat would have chewed on it. I hope the new owner likes his/her prize. Now I get to do more shopping for PIPES, and I really, really hate looking for pipes. :D

Damn. But don't worry, these things have a way of balancing out. (I'm a strong follower of Emerson.)

On the bidding question -- I don't do online auctions, so not an issue for me, and I'm a bit confused about how anyone knows who else is bidding in one of those. Speaking in the abstract, though, if it's not a birth year Dunhill, or something equally as sentimental, if I knew someone else here wanted a pipe badly enough actually to ask for such consideration, I'd give it. It's just a pipe after all.
All that said, I'm FAR more concerned about the idea of a grown man needing "permission" to spend more than $20. It's not stated, but I presume form the post this "permission" is going to come from your bride, Mayfair? If so . . .
Well, one of Robert's Rules (I'm Robert) is that no one understands anyone else's marriage. And there's proof.

I have seen guys post about stuff they are watching and always go and look, and probably wouldn't bid myself. But I'm with Pipestud. I wouldn't post about something I am interested in because that just makes more people aware of it. Take tobacco for example. When I find something I love I try not to post about it because hysteria sets in sometimes in this community and then things become impossible to find. I'll tell my close friends, but not shout from the roof tops.

You must have a wire connected to me, probably everyone else too. I am so glad I'm not married...

@tslex - My girlfriend and I have an agreed upon budget. Since WE have a budget and STICK TO IT, we went looking for a new car today so we don't have to take the bus. It looks nice, gets good mileage, handles well and the price is about right. I am certainly a grown man and I try to be polite and a gentleman because deep down I am probably the meanest person you'll ever run across. I am 6 feet 2 inches and 240 lbs. One of Michael's Rules, and I'm Michael, is you don't call someone a pussy online unless you would do it to their face. You would NOT say what you wrote to my face. Judging by your character, I'm betting there are a great number of things you need to be MORE concerned about than my personal relationships, you piddling asswipe. Do you have any more acute observations you'd like to make? How about my girlfriend? You know nothing about her, you should be able to conjure at least a paragraph, Einstein. You started this, Mr. Robert, now let's see how you finish it.
