My PAD budget took an awful beating in Montreal so no bidding planned, but there is no guarantee if it's an old Dr. Grabow bulldog or author. I do stay away from some brands that I know others on here may be after but it's difficult to see one go cheap and only hope it's a forum member bidding.

I really don't think you have to worry simply because of the price. I don't have a single pipe, excluding cobs, worth under $40. You certainly won't have to worry about me!

I will not be bidding on anything at that time. Although, I never bring up an auction if I plan on bidding. The less attention the better in my opinion. Good luck and I hope you get it.

Agreed with the above. If there's a pipe on auction, and I want it, I keep my mouth closed. However, some people who know my tastes have directed me to a given pipe on the bay,

If a pipe is within my budget I bid. If someone here links an auction with questions I don't bid on it unless, of course, I already have. :)
If I link or ask a question here about a particular auction I have no issues with anyone here that bids on it. I figure I am educating myself and if I miss out I will get the next one. Someone once told me that if you miss out on an auction dont fret, another just like it will appear someday.

So far, I haven't knowingly bid against another member here. I have several times been asked for my opinion regarding a pipe up for auction by other members here, and asked if it's one for which I have an interest in bidding. People are very polite here, telling me that they won't bid against me if it's something I want, and I generally say that if they want it, they can have it and I won't bid against them. I have no shortage of pipes, and no sane need for more. I've also had people request that I not bid on something that they're really interested in obtaining, and I don't mind. I'm pretty happy with what I've got, don't see a need to be a pig about it, and besides, there's always more pipes.

If I liked someone, and knew that something was important to them, and had no actual need for it myself, I think I'd take joy for their success. Envy will eat your soul.
Also, to echo Sable's comments: at this point, most of what I regret in life is piling up stuff I did not actually need. Extra stuff has to be moved, dusted, gets in the way, etc.
I think longingly of the post college days when I could do stuff like live in vans down by the river etc.

I dunno, not maliciously to bid on something just so they couldn't have it. If I liked a pipe on auction and someone from the forums also did, it's all about what the item is worth in the buyers mind. So it's fair game.
Having said that, I wouldn't go posting links to the auction on this site telling everyone how excited I am about the pipe. I've bought many a pipe on ebay and I might have bid against any one of you.
Best course of action is to hold off the post to links to the auction after you've won it.

I don't buy at auction. I take a long, long time deliberating on buying pipe, or whether to buy a pipe at all. If I did buy at auction, I wouldn't snake a pipe from someone else if I knew in advance they were more than casually interested. In other words, on this score, I'm not a problem.

If I were already bidding on an item before learning of another member bidding on the same, I would continue to bid on that item and I would wish the other member luck and encourage him to continue his bidding as well. However, if I learned a member was bidding on an item that I liked, if I was not yet a bidder I would not bid against him, regardless of how much I liked the pipe. I believe this would be the honorable way of it.
Now, on my first example. If I learned the other bidder wanted the pipe in some sentimental way (suppose it reminded him of a passed family member, or just a very fond memory) then I might perhaps drop out of that bid.

I'm really glad I brought up this topic. I hadn't considered the fact it may be unfair to the seller to "rig" or influence potential buyers. Not to mention asking fellow pipers to step aside whilst "I get mine." I can be myopic to begin with. Throw in a beautiful pipe, woman or musical instrument and I'm doubly so. I appreciate the good advice to not advertise my intended targets. I have had my eye on several pipes and not been in a position to get them, only to see someone proudly posting pics of it a few days later. I harbored no ill will whatsoever. I also forgot about the great numbers of people not involved in the forums who peruse just to glean info for their next purchases. My biggest take away is just how considerate toward others' feelings this community is in general. You guys are pretty civilized for people who breath fire out of leaf filled wooden tubes.
I strangely feel more calm and focused now about acquiring new pipes. I'm still all over the map as far as shapes and styles. My modest collection is certainly becoming more eclectic as my smoking proficiency improves and my tastes in tobacco meander. There is one thing I can say for sure, you all are a nice nice bunch of folks. But don't worry, your secret is safe with me. Oh, and I won't be acquiring any more Dr. Grabows to abuse anytime soon. So davet and company can rest easy. Thanks for the well wishes, mothernature and the rest of you. If I don't get this one, another similar one will come around eventually I'm told. Peace. :puffy:

Pipestud, as always, is a great human being. And mayfair, don't feel bad about this: I once did the same thing for a religious item when I reached my spending limit, and asked the next high bidder why I wanted the item desperately, and why I was uncouth enough to ask him not to bid further. Let us know if you win the pipe, and check with me about my PM.

By the way, gents, I'm going to be putting up my Drac 106 for auction on the bay; hate to let go of it, but need to winnow out my collection, and need the dough, and the pipe should be worth a pretty penny, since as far as I can tell, the Drac 106 is nowhere to be found around the globe.

I would say that all is fair game on eBay. If you don't want to peak interest in an item, then don't tell anyone else you are bidding on it.

There was one time I got into a bidding war and lost to later find out it was another forum member. He won it fair and square and I PM'd my congratulations with a note that if he every decided to sell the pipe to give me first shot at it.

What echoes through this thread is, despite how passionate we are about our pipes this group is most governed by a genuine concern for each other. It renews your faith in human nature and makes you glad you are part of the group.

What you fail to consider is that those of us who post with a sence of brotherhood and camaraderie is just the tip of the forum's iceberg. There are many many more who come here who don't post or even have accounts. Many times people post links to auctions only to have them jerked out from under them, and they get hurt but not by us. What Pipestud makes the most sence, especially since most of us are into a little different range of pipe. Just take care of business, and let us know after you've won. Because, even though those of us who post are close and wouldn't screw you over, I can't speak for the vast viewing audience.

It is considered bad form to post any active auction in a forum thread. (crazy $15k Dunhills, etc. excepted)
The British fans here are pretty tight knit. We generally know what each other likes and communicate via PM or email if something interesting shows up. I have plenty of pipes, if I know a forum member is looking for a particular piece, I would not knowingly bid against them. On occasion, I've sniped a pipe unknowingly from a friend, which I then sold right over to them.
