bigvan, I don't see guys who come here just to show their pipes and nothing else. I see guys talk about their pipes and what tobacco's they like smoking in them and what pairings are working for them. I see guys participating in many different sub forums and making friends as they go. Maybe I am missing something but I honestly don't see one guy who does nothing but post pictures of his pipes and then nothing else.
You may know Ace personally but his allegations about some mysterious 6 people running this site is total bullshit. I see hundreds of threads started by so many different guys that to say 6 people are somehow running this site is disingenuous and wreaks of petty jealousy. Seriously how can you sit there and agree with any part of his rant?
Let Ace speak for himself and let him have the balls to call out these 6 people and then show threads and examples of how 6 people have ruined this site. Enough with his being a pussy with innuendo and hiding behind his statement,

"Ok now no need to hammer on me, I'm gone. Have a good time telling how good you six or so are."

I notice members patting members on the back when they do something such as send someone a pipe or tobacco. They don't have to send a pipe, nor do they have to send tobacco, or a tamper, or a single pipe cleaner. They do it out of the kindness of their hearts. And for that, in my opinion, they deserve a pat on the back. Fnord deserves a pat on the back. Captainsousie deserves a pat on the back. Heck... Captainsousie helped out a buddy of mine getting into to pipe smoking... a guy that's not even a member of this forum. That deserves a huge pat on the back in my opinion. That's the kind of people I have encountered on this web forum. Perhaps Ace is a good stand up guy. Perhaps he's going through some crap that's messing with his mood. Sometimes you have to vent... sure. But Ace, if you see this, you should be ashamed for taking it out on the folks here. There are a lot of good people posting here.

All farting around aside, the carbon-based life forms here (and you know who you are) are all part of the conspiracy of 6...the atomic number of carbon is 666.

I think you've always got to filter any forum and decide how much is actual signal and how much is actually noise.
Ace, I don't exactly follow what your talking about BUT I hope you stick around.
Different styles, opinions, and budgets are what make this place interesting to me.
Edit: Ditto, micdabutcher

I have a feeling Ace's comments are related to the recent rash of "show off your..." threads. But these do not represent the whole of the forum, and they are darn good threads if you ask me.

There are very few pipe smokers in this world. It not like they are every where. This place has become a destination where i can come for advice but something more... to share in my joy. When I post a pic of a pipe, it never occurred to me that it would be perceived as bragging. I love hearing everyone's opinions. On the other hand, when someone buys a new pipe, be it a $12 MM or a $500 Dunhill, I am genuinely happy for them. So I for one say to everyone here, thank you! For you Special-Six.... double thank you! :puffy:

I can't speak for Ace, Six. And I'm not in total agreement with what he said (especially considering how many pictures I've posted). But I do hope he sticks around despite this unusual post.

bigvan, if you think about it, all of the artisan pipes that have been shown off in the last year or so are all your fault. You are the one who told us we need to start looking at American artisan pipes for the great smoking properties and value they represent. You were the first one to give us your list and show off your great collection. So in reality you are the Godfather of the 6 and Ace can thank you for his displeasure with this site. I hope you feel terrible. lol

Hey, I was on the fence on a Castello today. Ace pushed me over the edge. It was from a sponsor so now Kevin can afford another fancy smoking jacket and maybe place a deposit on another Adam Davidson commission. Thanks Kevin for keeping Pipe talk alive long enough for me to show of my new Castello!

chris, you are a bad man, how dare you buy a Castello and then have the gall to tell us you are going to post pictures of it. I think you should take your stinking Castello to the muscle car forums and show your new pipe there.

But Harris, this forum became the show off forum when the internet was invented, and people started forums where they posted pics of their muscle cars and Harleys.

OK. Being an "Old Member", I think I know where Ace was coming from with the Top 6 or whatever. There are a few members here who are (as another "Old Member" - hobie, put it) post whores. Personally, I enjoy these members and feel they add to the site (if for nothing else) with a sheer volume of posts. As for the "patting each other on the back", I think that's how we've ALWAYS rolled here on pm.com... I don't post like I used to because I spend more time moderating. With all the new members and the number of posts generated per hour, it is a daunting task.
I think though, that there is a sense of loss for those who were here many moons ago; who come back after a hiatus and don't see the same members who were prolific "back in the day". In my time here, (Wow, it's been 3 years!) I've seen many members come and make a big splash only to be gone less than a year later. It's the cyclic nature of internet forums and I'm guilty of it on other forums too. Is it disheartening to see friends disappear? Sure. Does it make the new crop of members any less important? Not at all. Do I wish everyone who ever posted here still posted? Sure! The more the merrier.
Anyway, if you read this Ace, you're always welcome here. This statement goes for all members in good-standing.

That is fine Jason. But to post a thread like this after a hiatus is beyond me. He has had the opportunity to post whatever he wants on this forum. Didn't he just came to post and bitch and say a farewell? Couldn't he be more proactive in the tone of the forums instead of posting a hateful thread and then say "I'm gone"? Damnit I thought we were almost Drama free. Thanks a lot Ace for fudging up my happy place!

As an "almost old timer" I gotta say that this may be the most drama I have seen since the "Uncle Arthur fiasco!!!!!!" Not that was some fun!!!! :nana:
