Your choice to show or not show. But I will say I learn so much when people show thief pipes - high end or budget - that it really helps me make buying choices. I'm not rich, but I have some money to play with. That being the case I'm on Ebay a lot and it really helps me make informed decisions on estates when people discuss the good and the bad of all pipes here.

At first I thought you were joking but on reading further I see you are not
I can understand your and your wife's concerns; taken in another context, say, "look at my new pocketbook" in a forum committed to political reform, could seem inappropriate.
But here, where each of us love the pipe smoking ritual, the PAD and TAD of it all, I think your wife misunderstands.
As others have said, I love to hear about each pipe you have acquired, whether lots of $$$ or less so.
There will be some who are envious, but from reading this forum for quite some time, I feel that these folks are far and few between
I love your sense of humor and every one of your posts, short or long
If your conscience bothers you for some reason, than do what you have to do.
I for one will miss your images

Peck,

Showing off to brag is one thing. Showing to share appreciation of beauty and style is another. I really enjoy looking at everyone's pipe - new, estate, or made. I don't care if they're thousands of dollars or a couple of bucks.
This forum's pipe pictures are like a B&M on steroids. Please keep posting the "eye candy".

Peck I've been married for 1-1/2 years had my house for 8 months now I make just enough to pay my mortgage and live a comfortable life I can't afford all the luxuries but I don't look at things as $$$ I look At the value of something. I don't have a car I had to sell my beautiful car cause I couldn't afford the insurance so I am lucky i have a company truck I can drive.
That being said I should be one of these guys who get annoyed or upset over these "show off" threads.
But they are the reasons I come on here in the first place I love them and genuinely take joy in others pads or great estate finds like nfisher and his recent dunhill great job man. I don't know why but I think some people here need to be reminded that this is a PIPE FORUM.
I would never know which pipes I like or styles I will peruse if it wasn't for pictures and peck I love every one you post.

Peckinpah... it would be a total shame if you quit posting photos of your beautiful pipes (the tormented blowfish comes to mind, because MAN that is one cool pipe)here. I'm a poor man. I live alone in a hotel. The last pipe I bought, I was able to purchase because I was lucky to work some serious overtime (long hours and 18 days without a day off) for a couple weeks. I figured I deserved it. You post pics of pipes I can only dream of acquiring some day. I sure as hell can't afford something like that tormented blowfish of yours right now. But MAN do I LOVE to look at some of the beauties I've seen on this site posted by other members. And although I can't get a high dollar pipe now (That Nording I recently bought was a serious treat)I can dream that someday I will, and even have an idea of what I might like. So please, unless you feel it is morally wrong for you to do so, continue posting those babies. I for one want to see them. It doesn't hurt my feelings one bit.

I agree with all these fine folks. Keep on posting photos of your pipes, peck. They are appreciated. This is a site where we celebrate pipes and tobaccos. And yes this involves pictures. If someone doesn't understand this, they need their head examined.

Peck..and others- I think the thing that's great about this forum is that someone can show their $20 flea market find or their latest $1,500 acquisition from an artisan pipemaker and everyone responds with the same degree of enthusiasm. Keep the pictures coming!

Hi hi,
I am still pretty new here and still extremely new to pipesmoking. From a "new guy" perspective, I can see where someone who is just coming in can see people like Peck and Harris rattling off this $500+ pipe and that $800 pipe could seem like bragging when a bunch of people here can't afford $100 pipes.
That is where it falls to one's maturity and wisdom to stfu and O B S E R V E. Then, when they see the full body of postings by these perceived transgressors they learn that these people are kind and generous and as sharing of knowledge (and stuff sometimes) as of pipe pix.
I wish this Ace cat well.
It would be entirely hypocritical for me to share Ace's feelings, since I have a rather nice collection for being in the hobby for 9 months and could easily have some people on here calling me #7 if I keep on.
Also, I tend to lean towards the Libertarian and Free Market Capitalism. So if you earn the duckets to toss down 2k for this months PAD, or you can bid $300 for some random tin of 40 y/o baccy and not have to worry about your powerbill, more power to you! People should use that as MOTIVATION to figure out a way to make more money if it bothers them, not get all pissy.
I used my tax return for my pipe collection. And I, for one, would have a hard time paying my power bill if I tossed $300 for my TAD.
But I hold the "big 6" whoever they are on here blameless. I for one CHOOSE (also a factor) to see your uber pipe postings as a way to live vicariously and to see it as motivation to plan to make some extra $$ so I can get better pipes.
Post away my friends. I LOVE seeing your goods.
And I want to thank you ALL for being a wealth of kindness, knowledge and wonder.

Peck. I think that you have a part of it correct because to some it does look like bragging to those who might be sensitive to it. That said i've been around too many car guys my whole life and to many of that type of person, showing off is only partly about personal gratification but is mostly about sharing a passion. If you do stop posting pics I will be disapointed but will respect your decision. I do encourage you to continue sharing your passion for pipe beauty with us.

I imagine that when Ace joined this site there was a nice tight-nit group of guys that had a lot in common and had nice discussions about all things pipe and pipe tobacco. Over a period of time he's seen new pipe smokers come and stay and others come and go. Some bringing good stuff to the forum, and others bringing bad stuff to the forum. For some people its hard to accept change and when a group grows in size it becomes harder for some people to feel important and part of the conversation like before.
That's when you make the choice to grow with the group or leave it be and move on. If you don't like a thread then ignore the thread. Just because there's a thread there doesn't mean you have to read it and/or post in it.
Is the new breed "showing off"... maybe, but whats the difference between posing a picture of a new pipe or posting a comment about how you smoked a bowl of 30 year old "Three Nuns". Its still a form of bragging, but one has a picture and one doesn't. Personally, if you had an opportunity to enjoy some nice premium aged tobacco or scored a Dunhill for dirt cheap that's awesome. As rothnh pointed out its also great to hear the story about how you came upon the pipe purchase or had a chance to enjoy the aged tobacco. By all means if you want to "show off" that's fine by me, but the story is where the real appreciation comes in.

I've never been around a more accepting, generous and kindly group of folks than on this forum.
If that's not good enough for you, my friend - you are the one with the problem.
Thanks to everyone,
Dave

I really think you all read to much into the title "Show Off" and I'm sorry but I am now starting to get annoyed by this. Grow up stop taking crap so personally on a bloody online forum. I've seen people post way worst things on here then pictures. Pictures are something all of us can agree on where as people's opinions and comments of touchy subjects are the real threats to certain members.
There have been many opinions and views posted on here that I do not agree with however I'm not going to bother arguing it on here nor do I care. I just avoid them. So If I can do that and act mature enough about it them you members with problems about pictures can take a hike.
If I knew how sensitive members would be before creating the show off threads I still wouldn't change a thing. Cause I have I knew perspective on things on here now and I don't like it.
I realize I'm fairly new on here but I've already contributed a lot to the forum because I do enjoy it. If Ace is feeling something if missing he should take it upon himself to add it to the forum just as I did instead of rant and leave immaturely. Whatever I'm done ranting about this.

I've been a member for about two years. Yes, I miss the way things use to be but, things change. But, now, if cigarmaster, Bradley and ronth left, I would also miss them. It all comes down to how much time you are willing to put in this forum. I visit everyday, but I rarely post so some member don't know me as well as others. I like it like that. Keep up the good work guys.

Wow, I step away for a day and all heck breaks loose (and this thread is taking a lot of attention away from my last restoration post...)
Personally, I love seeing other members pipes, $5 - $500 in value.
I hope Peck was being sarcastic in not showing his new pipes. Just last week, I somehow noticed he has a Joe Nelson pipe. I've looked at Old Nellie pipes before, but never encountered someone who owned one. Now, if I get serious about an Old Nellie pipe, I made a mental note to check in with Peck and see how the pipe was doing for him. Where else can you get that kind of help and information? Without some personal recommendation, from someone I trust, it's doubtful that I would take a risk on an unknown (to me) pipe maker.
Someone else (Chris?) pointed out that in his area, he is the lone pipe smoker. Same here in my small rural community. I do get to travel to pipe clubs, but for the most part I'm a solitary smoker. Reading about other pipes/tobaccos here is a nice connection to the rest of the community.
Personally and selfishly, I hope the forum doesn't sway too much from where it is, a nice blend of social and collecting.
PS: but I do still hate those six guys.....or is it GIRLS??????

Howdy Al,
I have three Joe Nelson (Old Nellie) pipes and they are, no kidding, in my top-shelf smoking rack. One of them in particular, gets smoked almost everyday. My "motif" is American made sandblasts in traditional shapes and lightly or unstained. All three of Joe's pipes are sensational. He makes guitars for a living and is considered to be among the USA's best makers of handmade guitars. His talent carries over to his pipemaking. They carry a sweet tune when I smoke them.
Of course, I don't want to see any pics if you get one. It'll only make me jealous and think evil thoughts about you.

I like it the way it is F*#K Ace, we have to remember laying down for what you believe in and, being politically correct has led this Nation in what is the Giant Mess we have today, and here in our quiet little corner we have shareing helping and enjoyment of our passion, pipes, good stories and tobbaco. I like all the pipes 5$ to 1500$ won"t let an ungrateful, pissy, malcontent spoil it for me.
