Wow, 5 out of 5 on this one, we loved it. Paul Thomas Anderson directed it and it's mostly his personal remembrance of the 1970's in Hollywood. One of the most original movies I've seen in a long time.

Some insights to the characters portrayed.

I just finished a Documentary on Amazon Prime called My Name is Salt. It follows a family in India that travels out to the salt flats and spends 8 months out of every year coaxing the whitest salt in the world out of the earth. Not a single word is spoken in the entire full length feature. It was so well done I felt like I was eavesdropping on the family. The work they go through to make a buck is astounding.

The show is excellent and is well worth the watch.

Of note:

There was a lot of cigarette smoking in the film. It seems nearly everyone of age smoked. The interesting thing is they would often make a "Human Pipe" out of their hands to smoke them. They would make a calabash chamber out of their fist and stick the cigarette straight up between their fingers and draw through the opening created by their thumb. I had never seen that before. I guess if I had to smoke those nasty things unfiltered I too, would figure out a way to tone down their harshness...

Check it out! puffy

Last night we watched The Goldfinch on Prime. Half way through I would of rated 4/5, but this was 2:29 long and it dragged on. Final rating 3/5.

A boy in New York is taken in by a wealthy family after his mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In a rush of panic, he steals 'The Goldfinch', a painting that eventually draws him into a world of crime.

The other day we watched the documentary The Booksellers on Prime. I really enjoyed it and rate it 4/5. If you like old rare books and independent book stores, I think you'll enjoy it.

THE BOOKSELLERS is a lively, behind-the-scenes look at the New York rare book world and the fascinating people who inhabit it. Executive produced by Parker Posey and featuring interviews with some of the most important dealers in the business, as well as prominent collectors, auctioneers, and writers, THE BOOKSELLERS is both a loving celebration of book culture and a serious exploration of the future of the book.

Read the book, it's quite good, unlike the movie adaptation.

A couple of days ago I stumbled upon some films I had recorded on my Panasonic quite some while ago.

One of these films was called 'Out of the Furnace', and though the title didn't ring any bells, about 3 minutes into the film I realised I had watched it before but not deleted it, usually that means it was worth watching again. And it was!

Intelligently scripted and very well acted, it's the tale of 2 brothers in a steel mill town, one who works in the mill and his brother is a veteran returned from the Middle East and is a troubled soul.

Long story short he is involved in bare knuckle fighting and ends up fighting with some strange/psychopathic folks (the fantastic Woody Harrelson among them) 'who live in the mountains'.

Again, superbly written & acted with sterling performances from the lead characters....a solid 9/10.

Needless to say I still didn't delete it, such films are a rarity so saved again for future viewing.

Regards,

Jay.
