The first king (2019). An Italian movie about the story of Remus and Romulus. Somewhat gritty style. Watch if you like all those epic movies about Ancient Rome or Greece. Very good. 5/5

Earlier in the week found 2 DVD boxed sets of Clint Eastwood films I'd forgotten I bought some while ago.

The first boxed set was 'Fist Full of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More', 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' and 'Hang 'Em High'.

All classics of their time and a worthwhile 7.5 out of 10 from me.

The second boxed set has 8 films in the set, 7 of which I remember seeing on TV in my youth but the 8th film I've never heard of....'Joe Kidd'.

Well I watched 'Joe Kidd' last night and was pretty disappointed....the story was so predictable as was the acting.....how come no matter what scrape Eastwood gets out of, his hair is so perfectly coiffured

As I said, very predictable and in parts quite dull. 5/10 from this once Eastwood fanboy.

Regards,

Jay.

I'm on a bit of a British history DVD journey at the moment.

Last night I watched the first three episodes of 'The Normans' and their conquests all over Europe including of course Britain in 1066.

Tonight I watch the last episode 'Domesday' which is of course about the domesday book compiled on behalf of the now King William in 1086.

Professor Robert Bartlett presents the first three 1 hour episodes and Dr. Stephen Baxter the last episode.

Though he can be a little dry at times, Bartlett is clearly very passionate about this subject (as he is about all others I have seen) and gets his message across with ease if perhaps in a classroom style.

An excellent 4 hour visit to a part of our* history that if you weren't listening in class you would do well to watch.

A solid 8.5/10 from this amateur student of history.

* When I say 'our history' I mean anyone with the remotest speck European blood in them for the reach of the Normans was very long indeed.

Wrapped up the first & second seasons of the series "The Food That Built America" on Discovery+. The first season was only three episodes and had a markedly different tone and style than the 13 episodes contained in the second season. The first was more stylized documentary, the second contained dramatized reenactments of pertinent events throughout the story of whatever figures they were documenting in that particular episode.

It is nice to learn the history and stories behind the food that lines the shelves of our grocery stores and the sides of our roadways. It was interesting to learn about how events like the great depression and the world wars helped spur innovation in the food sector. While the series could be a little over dramatic with the poorly done reenactments, overall I enjoyed it. So did the wife and kids. (4/5*)

*I believe there is a third season, but I haven't seen it.
We were impressed by how innovative Heinz was.
