Relaxing after a wonderful salad, chicken legs and snow peas dinner with strawberries for dessert. I've passed the quarter mark of this bowl of 2014 Sutliff 1849 in a medium bend smooth dark brown 1968 Barling 5631 London England TVF billiard silver spigot with a tapered black vulcanite stem. Community Coffee, neat, is my drink. Watching Asia, which is a nature show on BBC America.

Firebird in a Wiley. Spent the last couple hours visiting with a friend who just lost his dad last Thursday. So sad because it was preventable if his dad hadn't been so stubborn and gone to the doctor a few days earlier.

Bud, that is so hard. I am glad you were there for your friend. I wish peace on him and his family.

Yeah, I think we all experience foibles like this . . . . I have some trouble with tongue bite and lip sensitivity with certain tobacco components . . . . for me, particularly perique, which I'm particularly fond of. As perique, I understand, is a process, like cavendish, and not necessarily a particular tobacco, I've found a couple of perique blends that aren't so bad, like Mad Fiddler, and others that are not so good. I know that some others are bothered by Virginias. And so on it goes. We have to experiment to find out what we can and can't do so we can enjoy our pipes more. Good post!

Like pretty much all matters in pipe smoking, filters do seem to be a, "Try it and see what works for you" sort of matter. Until just recently I had never thought to try a filter with the Burley blends the bother my throat, since I always thought of a filter as something that just reduced the moisture content of the smoke and maybe took out a little tar and nicotine, not something to reduce the harshness of a blend.

The Dr. Grabow and Medico filters I've tried definitely do make Burleys easier on my throat though, the Grabows especially since they seem to filter the smoke a bit more. Next up I'll have to order some Savinelli balsa wood filters to see what effect they have (though I suspect they won't be as effective as a paper tube filter for reducing harshness since the smoke just passes around them instead of through them) and give the Vauen Dr. Perl Junior 6mm activated carbon filters a try too when I can find some in stock. I'm guessing the carbon filters will probably be the most effective of all, though I have heard they make the draw quite restricted and they are rather expensive and difficult to find in stock.
