Ha ha ha! Actually, that goes back to cigar smoking, and I probably don't really follow that with the pipe. However, I do still sometimes smoke my pipe too fast. I have been getting better at slowing down and it is always more enjoyable when I do.
I think some guys do smoke as slow as a puff a minute. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I think if you go faster than a puff every 20 seconds though you will start to get close to getting it too hot.

Welcome Patriotfirst,

We are always happy to welcome new "peeps" to the fraternity.

I agree with most of Phil's basics.

I don't know about the once per minute though. I would be stoking my pipe every time.

And, second I would use the bottom fill first method, at least in the short run.

I have found that by using a complete fill from the outset tends to create a

heavy cake on the upper portion of the pipe while allowing no formation lower down in the bowl. This narrows the top of the bowl and may require that some of the cake be removed at this early stage.

My favorite method consists of quick shallow puffs in bursts of 3 or 4 with roughly 20 seconds of patience between bursts (at least) until you get the hang of tamping and puffing for endurance. After a short while will come that looong slooow luxurious draw, that for me is the reward that makes all the inconvenience and art of pipe smoking worth its while.

Good luck with your first pipe.

And again, welcome to the fraternity we're glad to have you.

Let us know how it goes. I personally envy you and your exciting journey of discovery into our beloved hobby.

First off, a little explanation on the moniker. I got that nickname years ago and it stuck with me since I am the founder and acting president of Northeast Wisconsin's largest organized cigar club (includes pipe enthusiasts). I never served in any branch of the military but since soldiers seem to do all the fighting and get none to little of the credit, I inherited that name for all my work with no glory of running a cigar club.

I have only been a pipe smoker for 3 to 4 years and find myself getting more and more into it so I'm looking forward to the great advice I see you guys offer up. So far I'm only a briar guy and haven't ventured too far into many brands outside of a few favorites from my local tobacconist but I'm trying lots of new stuff and love the endless varieties out there.

Actually, this is better advice on the puffing and more accurate - what pstlpkr said:

I continually sip my pipe. I rarely puff my pipe except while lighting. It works for me, and keeps a bowl going for long periods. If I am reading a book, sometimes I get 2 hours. Plus, it doesn't smoke up a room, which my wife appreciates.
Welcome soldier.

Three Oaks Syrian by McClelland... I think that shall be my English of choice. It is damn good.
Rare Syrian Latakia, with its renowned mellow smokiness, is balanced with naturally sweet oriental tobaccos and aged Virginia leaf to create a satisfying blend reminiscent of classic Syrian Latakia blends of old. Formulated by Tad Gage to reflect the character of original Three Oaks Pipe Tobacco, it tantalizes with intriguing differences.
Anyway, one puff a minute? I have been trying this but the tobacco goes out... I certainly don't think I have a serious problem with packing the pipe. I pack it in layers also. Maybe I need to take 2-min draws on the pipe til the smoke pops out my toes to keep it lit for the in-between 1-min non-draws?

I'm a bit of a puffer myself. I don't pay much attention to it though. I suppose when I'm "in the groove" I'll slow down to about one puff every 10 seconds or so. If I'm having fun with a particular cadence I'll ignore the rules. (Who made those rules anyhow!? ...and what's the penalty,

pipe demerits?)

Those who make the rules should be made to live by them.....
I don't follow any rules.

In fact; I find that different types of tobacco require, differing methods of packing, and keeping them lit.

It just depends on your style.

I guess what I wrote I thought to be just a basic method/style that works for me.

(thanks Kevin)

Hey everyone, just found this thread. I'm quite new to the site (couple of days). I've been smoking a pipe for about a year. I used to smoke cigarettes, but thankfully quit that habit about 10 years ago. I really enjoy smoking the pipe, smoking for pleasure rather than need, it really is a shame that the anti-smoking ideology is cranking down on ALL tobacco.

Being new to pipes I've primarily smoked (american) aromatics, particularly from Pipeworks and Wilke. That Vermont Maple Cavendish is a dream. But, I am lately turning to other smoking experiences, notably trying out the Stonehaven from Esoterica. Wow, what a smoke, though too strong for me. I'm looking to try other Esoterica blends, but also, I think, Chelasea Morning and Westminster form GL pease. It's really great being able to get all these prime American tobaccos over the internet (I live in Denmark, and there are sadly no Danish pipe tobaccos I enjoy). I've got a few pipes, mostly Savinellis, they seem a good value-for-money alternative. But I might be starting a new job soon, and I contemplate celebrating it by getting that Dunhill pipe. Wow, this really got to be a long post, so I'll just stop by saying; glad to be here!

Welcome danishpuffer!
I'm glad you are enjoying the American tobaccos and can easily obtain them.
Savinelli makes great pipes. I have two of them and they are two of my favorites.
Again, welcome to the site.

Welcome danishpuffer,

I tried a half pound of a Maple blend not long ago. (Christmas gift from my wife)

I loved it. When I would open the bail top jar the whole room smelled like a syrup factory. It was great. But, after about a week the aroma was almost gone.

My tobacconist tried it for a while and it was wildly popular, but it just wouldn't keep.

So, he doesn't carry it anymore, Damn shame.

I'm looking forward to your posts.

And again, welcome, you'll love this site, and the guys.
