I'm an indoor smoker and always have been. I use a Filtrete Air Filter with a charcoal filter that eliminates the odor of pipe smoke and my wife's cigarette smoke. I had to recently give up cigarettes because I have a developing Abdominal Aortic Aneurism. It sucks getting old.
Sorry to hear about your health problem. Hopefully your health will improve with time. I wish you all the best..............

Ah, I remember it well. Smoking in restaurants, waiting rooms, work places, trains, planes, busses, and homes everywhere. It was such a part of life that during and after WWII, world leaders used their preferred smoking devices as a personal trademark -- Churchill's cigar, Stalin's pipe, FDR's cigarette holder, MacArthur's corncob pipe, etc. I took a bus trip from Chicago to visit my cousin and his parents in Florida, and I had to walk off the nicotine sickness when I arrived, before I called them to come pick me up. As a result, I am private about my smoking and am wary of exposing others to it. I try not to impinge on others' freedom with my freedom to smoke.

The only time I enjoyed smoking indoors is when I was at the pub (or a club in my younger days). Never smoked inside where I lived. Those were my cigarette smoking days though, when it took 5 minutes to get my fix. Standing outside in the cold was tolerable. Smoking a pipe is a different story though lol.

Here in Germany there is no smoking inside anywhere, but outside, pretty much anything goes. I look forward to smoking my pipe in the Biergarten in a couple of months.

Indoor smoking is dependent on having a great ventilation/air extraction system. The cigar lounges and smoking bars I frequent do not have any lingering tobacco odour. I can spend a couple of hours and not leave smelling of a bonfire.

Some years ago I was staying in a hotel where you were allowed to smoke in your room. I lit up a cigar. BAD mistake. The room stank of stale cigar smoke for the remainder of my 5 day stay.

Had a flight delayed for several hours once. I found a Smoking Room and opened the door to a fug (f...ing fog !) and stench of cigarette smoke.
I swear my clothes stank of stale smoke for the next half hour, even though I did not set foot inside that room :poop:

I do agree with all those sentiments about enjoying our smokes, so long as we don't impose ourselves on non-smokers

Everywhere. Really. What ever happened to the romance of smoke filled rooms in nightclubs and bars? Now...I do appreciate reasonable ventilation...

I'm not one to snub my nose at cigarette or cigar smokers either. Seriously, pipe smoke is somehow more elevated? Not so much.

Courtesy is key. Not gonna smoke in a non smoking house, but with a tolerant crowd all is well. (And some cracked windows..)

I smoke indoors in my cabin, inside my truck, camper etc...I would not be smoking there if any person visiting me would not like the smoke,,,.ventilation-open window...smoking outside as well on my camping trips, travels but pipe really taste the best sitting by the open fire outside my cabin with my friends eventually cooking something on it and sipping something good...

Most cigar and pipe smokers are pretty considerate and would try to find a spot away from other people.
We enjoy outdoor concerts in the park and I always enjoy a large hand rolled premium cigar so I try to arrive early and find an empty spot so anyone arriving after us knows what they are going to smell. Over the years I seen a few people move but I've gotten more "Oh I wish I had a cigar" comments.

I think there were some interesting point brought up. I agree with posters here who talked about avoiding it around those with allergies or asthma or pregnant women, that makes sense. I also agree with the posters who talked about allowing store owners or businesses to allow smoking or not. I remember a long time ago in some parts of the country it was up to the restaurant to allow smoking or not. People who didn't want to smoke just didn't go to that place, no problem. I think if you're in a bar or pool hall or whatever, it's pretty expected, but maybe that's just me.

Some brought up filtration and that's what I think is key. When people smoke in a restaurant here, you can smell it for a few minutes, and then it goes away. I remember as a child walking past the smoking section and smelling that foul smell people describe. I used to just think it was what smoke caused, but I'm now seeing that's just what poor ventilation causes.

I smoke in my home, but I have a purifier and I open a cross-breeze window. While the pipe is going, the purifier registers as "red" and about 10 minutes or so after I'm done, it's back down to a low yellow or even green (obviously meaning good). I can smell the odor of the tobacco that evening, and maybe the next day if it's an aromatic, but then, it's gone.

All of this sort of got me thinking about my experience back home and being relegated to a second-class citizen because I'm a smoker. I remember countless friends in college telling my how bad it was, to the point I had to minimize contact with them over it because it was quite annoying. The looks of disdain from passerby's, the non-smoker's staring at you in the designated smokers section outside (I think there was a Seinfeld episode that addressed this pretty well or some other sitcom I'm not fully remembering).

To sort of sum it all up, I think we've gone overboard in some parts of the world against smoking. It's something people are going to do, so why not relax and let each other be? It seems other parts of the world are managing to regulate aspects of smoking without targeting smokers themselves.

Years ago, I'd walk our dog after dark in Central Park. (Not dangerous: there were lots of other dog walkers out and about.) There was always a guy sitting on a bench with his little dog at his feet smoking a nice big stogie. As soon as I smelled his cigar smoke my mouth would water!
