I just remembered another English I tried around Xmas and thought I’d pass it along.

I found it on the Pipes & Cigars website, and it’s very affordable. It’s their MATCH My Mixture 965. I actually like it better than MM 965, tbh, and I really enjoy MM 965. But to be fair, I’d have that this particular match blend is in name only. IMHO, they smell and taste quite different.

Here’s the dif:
MATCH is a little less smoky, and the brown cavendish is much sweeter and more forward. It’s super tasty, and to my mind, smells exactly the way I remember the tobacconist shop smelling when I was a young boy in the early 80s and would go in with my dad.

And while is sweeter and less robust, I don’t mean at all to say it’s not robust, or that it’s leaning towards an aromatic. It’s an excellent smoke, and I was happily surprised.

Now I need to order more.

Best of luck.
I haven’t yet tried any “Match” tobacco. Can you enlighten me on the Match blends? Who actually makes Match? Why should one try them? I’ve been seeing them more and more.
thank you for your info.

I have to recommend Robert Lewis Orcilla Mixture. It’s similar to Presbyterian and EMP as it’s very mild on the latakia but the blend uses a very unique combination of orientals, virginias, and a small amount of perique as well. It is one of my favorite complex but mild latakia blends.

Watch City Cigar makes some good English blends also. I've had Ahabs Comfort and Noreaster and found them to my liking though they are a bit heavy on the Latakia.

Good to know. Other than a certain VaPer releasing today, my next forays into B&M blenders are some Burleys from Peretti and Uhle. But that's another topic.

I’m not 100% sure who exactly makes them. Someone with more knowledge of the industry than I have can hopefully answer that one. I assumed it was blenders who either worked for the businesses who sell them, or either they all buy them bulk from some blenders who specifically work in trying to match popular blends.

As for why should buy them, all I can do is tell you why I bought the few I have: Because they’re quite a bit cheaper. For example, 2 ounces of Match Nightcap is only around $3-$4, verses $15-$20 for the tin of the same size of Peterson’s Nightcap.

Word of caution tho; of the match blends I’ve tried, I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re matches. Close. But not exact. Which is to be expected. So in my mind, I basically think of them more as “related” blends than identical twins.

Thank you. That’s great information to keep in mind.

I know Sutliff has a bunch of "Match" lines in their bulk offerings, including Early Morning and 965.

For maybe a century, Dunhill 965 was the gateway drug for English blend aficionados.
I don't know how the Peterson incarnation stands up to the original though.
