I adored the pipe, and I grew obsessed with the pipe, that obsession bleeding into loving and obsessing about cigars. I smoked alone, albeit with numerous instances of seeking the society of and the tacit approbation of others at my tobacconist's shop.

I would say usually alone. For me, there is nothing more satisfying than being outside in nature, watching the trees sway in the warm breeze of summer, or seeing those same trees stark and gray against a foreboding storm approaching when the world has turned all but grey. The birds chirping, squirrels playing, eagles flying by, and the occasional deer or owl are my only companions. I feel that my pipe connects me to the natural world around me in a way that little else can. There is no reason for most to simply sit and stare for 20 minutes or so outside, but I do it several times a day. Is this bad for my health and will I shorten my life by doing this? I don't know for sure. But if yes, then so be it. I feel I am gaining much more than any possible losses...

To go back to the original post; I only smoke outdoors. I can't smoke in our apartment simply because my wife has some long term issues following a bout of illness 3 years ago which make her very sensitive to smoke amongst many other things.

She doesn't mind me smoking when we are outdoors together (not often in the current situation). It's just unfortunate we have one of the few apartments in our building which doesn't have a balcony.

So all my smoking is outdoors; and pretty much every morning I go for a 10k walk. For the first half it is just that - a walk. Just over half way I come to a large bench around a very larger planter (full grown trees rather than shrubs...) in a sunny spot where I can smoke a pipe, read a book or just watch the world go buy. A few of the older dog walkers say a few words as they pass but I'm pretty much left in piece to enjoy my pipe. After that break I generally smoke for the last part of the walk (well, except when popping into the grocery store to pick up things).

I sometimes pop outside for an afternoon smoke; standing across the road from the apartment to catch the afternoon sun.

I don't mind talking to people when I'm smoking but with social distancing that doesn't happen much. So far in São Paulo I've not had any of the fake 'coughing' when my pipe is spotted; happened once to me in Australia when a couple about my age were walking towards me in the street and the lady did a few quite loud coughs whilst glaring at me I'd only just filled my pipe and hadn't lit it! As they came close I said "that's a nasty cough you have there; just as well I haven't lit my pipe otherwise it might aggravate it". If looks could kill... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I smoke outside all year round sitting on the patio in my garden.I prefer to commune with nature on my own its a time when I like to contemplate things. I tend to smoke early morning and late at night when there is no one around.

I mostly smoke alone. That is especially true this past year. I will admit that I have been missing my pipe club meetings and hope they can resume sometime soon. That once a month interaction with other pipe friends was enjoyable.

Being an only child and a retired engineer I'm not known for my social skills. I don't mind having company while I smoke but I don't actively seek it out. I'm not a "socialist."

I talk to people all day long. Pipe time is just for me.
Not totally opposed to it, but silence is golden.

I spent yesterday afternoon in a fairly crowded Tucson cigar shop and I was very surprised to see three guys come in for pipe tobacco but non of them stayed to hang out.

Local B&Ms here often have a few cigar smokers in the lounge but pipe smokers only stay long enough to make purchases, myself included.
