I've been in the process of making one for several months now (lack of time and motivation). Going to be a two tier thing, 3 on top tier and 4 on bottom. I have a grand design in mind that's ridiculously fancy using hard maple, mahogany and leather. I actually just drilled the first part the bowl rests. I actually already made this piece but in testing, the pipes were too close together for my taste. I have at least found the stain I want to use on the mahogany (the maple will be left natural).

In the meantime, I just have an inexpensive 5-pipe stand from KAFpipe that I bought on Amazon:

What does the wall rack say?
Accurately translated is “Life Is A Smoke” but closer to the actual meaning is ‘Life Is But Smoke’. It is a Memento Mori. The symbol at the bottom center is a stylized Angel of Death and the outline is a wisp of smoke (signifying that life is fleeting). Back when this was made the average life span was about 50 y/o (and in most cases, much less) so this would have had great meaning to that generation of pipe smoker. I look at this saying every morning to remind myself that life is short so I must Get To Work and make the most of it. It is by far my favorite smoking accessory. Thanks for asking.

It's Dutch and I really like it a lot :)

What a great thread!

I am exactly looking to replace my current set up with something more organized. At the moment I have 3 racks to hold my 20 odd pipes. As much as I am trying to resist the PAD bug, I realize that I can only do so much, so I need to find a solution that will accommodate more than 20 odd pipes (up to 50 perhaps) and would also hold about 30-50 lbs of tobacco. Ideally, I am thinking of a cabinet, something like a vintage china cabinet. I do not care about displaying my pipes, just to store them away from direct abundant light as well as away from dust as much as possible.

The set-up pictures posted here (how some of you solve for that same challenge) are immensely helpful from brainstorming stand point. Once I settle on something, I will make sure to share here as well.

Oof to Kijiji in search of antique cabinets.

As I look to get a new pipe, I took a look at my existing pipes in an effort to 'cull the herd'. Turns out I just need a bigger barn.

I'd like to see some different ways you guys are storing your pipes. I have limited space for them, and need some ideas on how to store / display them.
If you are a little handy and creative, Here is a relatively easy one but time will be required. Head to a local liquor/state store and inquire about any wood (pine) wine crates they may have available (usually they will not charge you especially if making a purchase). Ask if they have different size wine crates available and pick the size you have room for. Here are pictures of mine as an example….

Here is a FB marketplace curio cabinet set i recently acquired gratis! Distressed wood with lighting. The pair were in perfect shape with all glass shelves and hinged touch lights. Heavy as hell and his moving was my gain! Check CL and FB marketplace for deals and steals

I have found circular pipe racks to be the most space efficient, whether on a cabinet shelf or on a tabletop.
Also, the design is most accommodating for larger pipes as they do not bump against one another.

For easy access, it is best if these racks are placed on a "lazy Susan" rotating platform.
Some circular racks have a rotating platform already built-in.

Quality circular racks are becoming harder to find.
Here is what I have found -- I own each of these and am delighted with them all:

Since my last post here, I’ve added two more of the small cedar and glass cases, grabbed some cabinet lighting off eBay and my wife found this old stackable book case for my tobacco tins. I try to separate the pipes by maker or style (ie, bamboo stems or vintage boxed sets together).

While I still have a few of the more conventional racks, such as the one pictured with some of my antique meerschaums, I decided a while back to go more "vertical" in my storage approach. This brought about a board with wooden pegs glued into it at a slight angle. I have it on the side of my cigar humidor and it takes up very little space and is very handy for seeing and selecting my pipe of choice.

Not a very glamorous method, it is very functional and works well for my needs.
