mikephillips,
You are right. I will never change. I must say that any quality "Red-Port" such as Mavro Daphne (Greek) or Martini Sweet Vermouth is a very enjoyable condiment to the flavors of my favorite smoke.

mike,
You can buy "Mavro Daphne of Patros" in two Greek Brands. On hand, I have a case of it from Kortake. The other brand I can't recall at the moment. However, they are indistinguishable. I have seen it listed on Greek Menus as a "Port". However, it is in a class by itself. To me it is as potent as Port but lighter on the taste buds. More of a sweet grape flavor. That is why I think it goes so good with my blend. I enjoy grape and Latakia.

I also like a nice port with my pipe, but to stay on topic The Macallan 12 yr is my go to single malt. I have a lovely wife that graces me with The Macallan 18 yr on either Father's Day or my birthday. I was at a cigar event called "The Big Smoke" some years ago in Atlantic City at the Borgata and I did a vertical tasting of Glenfiddich 12,15,18, and 21 yr old. That my friends was a good day

so - the 12 yr green label glennfiddich (sp.?) is a decent low peat single? I am not a big peat fan. and I was always dying to try a decent one I would not throw out due to not liking it. drink it warm? cool? I get the spalsh of water.
also thank you for the map - it was really valuable.
about what is the cost of the 12 yr glennfiddich?
thank you.

John Barr Red Label and Duggan's Dew here. Both blends and both good IMO.

Since this thread started I've acquired 6 single malts and 1 blended and a bottle of Ron Zacapa 23. Finished the Glenlivet 18, 3 weeks ago. Loved it. I think I'm ready to pop open the laphroaig 10 yo.

any nibbles on my questions above? also - do you drink scotch while pipe smoking or do you just savor it by itself? curious - would go good with a bowl of tobacco but you will not get the subtleties of taste of the scotch while dong a heavy bowl of latakia based blends.

@graywizard - Haven't tried the Glenfiddich 12, but as for the drinking scotch with the pipe; I have heard from several sources (many on here) that drinking alcohol while smoking the pipe can exponentially increase the chances of oral cancers, as the scotch kills the naturally protective coatings in the mouth.

So most of the time, I will wait until after I finish my smoke before I partake of the Water of Life. With that said, a good scotch and a good baccy can be a fantastic experience together, and I will occasionally mingle the two. After all, what is life without a touch of risk?

Actually not. One puts a small amount of water (drops, or up to half a teaspoon--and here the Scots prefer water from the same source as the scotch was made with, and failing that, a good spring or even filtered water,) and it truly opens up the scotch. You can see the esters forming, and when the reaction subsides. Sip it both with and without. You may be surprised.

@Graywizard - I don't think there is a "right" or "wrong", just different methods for different experiences. Whatever you end up liking the most is what you should go with.

Personally, I like my scotch room temp with just a drop or two of water to open it up. It does make a difference in the flavor.

When I drink bourbon or other whiskeys, I usually use my whiskey stones to chill them just a bit. But I never use ice, as I don't like to dilute the flavor. If it tastes bad enough I need to dilute it, I just get rid of it.

been out in the vineyard working so i do not lose grapes for my wines and table to. came in took a shower and writing vineyard notes and cracked open this 12 yr. Glenfiddich. Damn nice stuff and smooooooth. wow! I could get used to this.
Been a long time for me and scotch. the few i tried within the last 15 years or so were way too peaty for me and lost all the subtleties. this is very nice. Thanks for turning me on to this and also to scotch again.
Best wishes gentleman and ladies (as applicable).

Just opened a bottle of Bowmore Legend ($22 on sale) and what a great value it is. Easy with the splash of water with this one.

I don't know if I could ever pick a favorite scotch, but I will say I got a bottle of Laphroaig Cask Strength a few month back and it is fantastic. It's a nice peaty aroma and taste, but it is probably the smoothest stuff I've ever had. Best part of it being cask strength, watering it down only makes it better. Also, I'm a big fan of GlenDronach 15. It's a unique single malt. I believe it is one of the only scotchs still being made in the ultra-traditional method. The distillery has their own malting floors and they still fire the stills with coal. It's a really well balanced drink.
But, I would say I mostly drink a Pinch 15 yr. old (Dimple for our friends across the pond), its a solid blend and I've never met a tobacco it didn't compliment. It has one drawback though, IMO it really looses something when watered down, so no fun with ice (a bummer for me in the summer). However, its good and inexpensive (for scotch).
Also, I frequent a pretty good burbon, that I only drink cause it reminds me of a mellow scotch, called Labrot & Graham Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select (about $30 a bottle). It's a really nice drink neat, perfect for a digestif.
