Not quite Scotch, but Scotch-based: Is anyone familiar with a source in the USA for "Glayva" liqueur, Scotch blended with tangerine, almonds, and spices, which I really enjoyed in the U.K.
I've seen it listed by third-party sellers through Amazon, but the label is different from the ones I've seen, which makes me think it may be counterfeit. My local liquor superstore, which I thought stocked everything, had never heard of it. I'd love to get my hands on some (by the way, "Glayva" apparently means "very good!" in Gaelic.)
And, when it comes to Scotch, "The Famous Grouse," all the way!

Peckinpah: You might change you mind about blends if you try Johnnie Walker DOUBLE Black. It is relatively new and has a great peaty taste. I have never shared it with a scotch drinker who didn't love it. It is meant to drink straight or with a bit of ice. Not for mixing or soda. Great with a pipe and a Lat blend. It was my favorite drink. In bars I had to settle for Chivas, but at home I always kept a case of Double. Talking about soda, do you know the Nat King Cole song "Scotch and Soda"?

I usually stick with bourbon, but when I do indulge in glass of scotch I usually go with Glenlivit 12.. I need to broaden my horizon and branch out to some of that really good stuff!

I have to say I love single malts tried in the past by trying out a Glenlivit 12 which was my introduction to single malts which complimented my cigar smoking at that time. I then tried the Glenfiddich 15 year and fell in love with the brand and the taste of the drink. Since then when smoking a cigar or enjoying a pipe I like to relax with a Glenfiddich 15. Lately have been thinking of trying the Glenfiddich 18 for my birthday I will let you know how the experience went.

Bowmore for the price is a great peaty choice. Like many I enjoy many different single malts. The blend I seem to reach for the most is Teacher's Highland Cream. Its not a peat bomb but it has a high percentage peated malt from the Ardmore distillery. Black & White was a blend I enjoyed but it was discontinued up here in Canada.

If Lagavulin 16 weren't $126 for a bottle in my province, I'd probably drink it all the time.

Instead, I cheap out with Laphroiag quarter cask and Bowmore. Talisker for special occasions.

I attended a "Whisk(e)ys of the World" tasting a few weeks ago, and as a result have added to the collection... Picked up some Bushmill's Black Bush and a bottle of Bulleit Rye...
The tasting included Chivas Regal Reserve, Bulleit Rye, Dickel Bourbon, Johnny Walker Platinum, Oban 14, Black Bush, and Lagavulin. It was quite the evening - the JW Platinum was evidently from the first batch shipped to the U.S., and had been express shipped from New York just in time for the event. The MC (or "Whiskey Ambassador") went through the various types of grains used in specific brands (barley, rye, corn, wheat) and had everyone try a sip neat first, then add a few drops of water - which he referred to as "awakening the dragon", based both on the appearance of the glass as the water mixes with the spirit, and to the opening of the nose that results. All in all, a very educational evening. I was astounded by the number of folks, however, who left partially full glasses on the table when they left - on the other hand, we'd already arranged with our friends to walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner afterwards, so we had no compunctions about finishing our own, and then 'helping' a gentleman behind us finish off a place setting that had been unoccupied... 8O :D

Hi samecoffeeman depends on your price range. There is so many choices. You are probably looking for a nice highland or speyside malt. Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glendronach are good starting points. The Bruichladdich mentioned by Peck in the 1st post is great stuff. It is a islay malt but it's not quite the same Laphroig or Bowmore.

Wish something tasted like Laphroiag quarter cask that was cheaper! So I drink it less often.

I love scotch and most whiskeys, sadly though my budget doesnt allow for any of the "Nice" ones. But if you only get to drink them once every few years. At least they that much nicer.

My wife and I bought a bottle of single malt scotch for a friend's birthday. It was aged 18 years and

cost as much as a mid-level Peterson, but we were being expansive. We took it to the birthday supper

and shared it around, with Chinese food in unending variety. We had a bit left that we enjoyed with the

guest of honor and his wife later at home. I will say, it was worth every penny. Why I didn't write down

the name of the scotch ... well, you know why I didn't write down the name of the scotch. But it was fine.

I live in Scotland, so I've drunk more single malt than is good for me!
Favourite island malt - Lagavulin (very peaty, like Laphroig, but with a briny note)
Favourite Speyside malt - 18 year old Macallan (still and always aged in sherry cask - stunning)
Favourite Northern malt - Highland Park (from Orkney - a touch of peat and super smooth - gorgeous)
I could go on.....and on......

I love single malts, mostly with less peat flavor. But, that does not mean I dislike Lagavulin or Laphroaig. I love Macallan and Highland Park as well. And Dalhwinnie. And Glenmorangie. You get the idea.
I am still awaiting a special moment to uncap my Isle of Jura that is now almost 30 years old. At the time I acquired it, my Scots friend said it was "a rare volume." Indeed.
I must also put in a word for Jack Daniel's Old No. 7. Hard to beat day in an day out for that wee dram of medicine. The Lynchburg, TN., legend is aged in charred white oak barrels. The water is the same it has been from the time Ol' Jack started his distillery. Many of those used white oak barrels by the by go to the Highlands for use in the single malt aging process.
JD also is the creator of Gentleman Jack, a "double run" much like the single malts. And Double Barrel, another double run. Go easy on the Double Barrel, however, or, as they say in Lynchburg, you'll get both barrels.
Sorry to stray off track. But, just had to put in a word about our famous sour mash, which originated from a Scottish single malt recipe.
