Laphroig and of course The MacCallen. There is also a Virginia distiller called Copper Fox that makes a VERY good single malt called Wasmunds. You should try it. WASMUNDS

@MikePhillips, you definatly should try just a splash of water with your Blackbush the guy is right it really does bring out the flavours. I never put ice in my drink but always a splash of water.

On the occasion of his birthday a friend shared some "Snow Phoenix" with me. A few years ago the weather turned unseasonably cold and a resulting heavy snow fall caved in the roof of the Glenfiddich storage shed for their whiskey. Apparently they worked desperately to save their stock. The result was re-kegging old and new whiskeys together in new casks which had been used for aging sherry. The result was what they called "Snow Phoenix" - rising out of the snow instead of ashes. It was smooth and unique. Very nice. I do not know how much was or is available. My friend still has some and I am hoping for one more round before it is no more.

I read that glenfiddich 15 year is as good as it gets for it and isn't worth the extra cash

For Smokey I've heard Bowore is amazing

Phred, you've been hanging out at "Pints" too much
There's no such thing as "too much" hanging out at Pints. :P
I do need to take the Stranahan's tour one of these days - my writing group meets there fairly regularly.

Tonight I am trying some Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or. It spends ten years in Bourbon casks and then another two years in Sauternes barrels and boy is it sweet. As soon as it hits you get the sweet right on top of a 10 YO Glenmorangine. It is different but not everyday for me. Sort of like a Scotch Old Fashioned without the fruit.

This helped me a lot when taste-testing a lot of different Scotch Single Malts until I finally settles on Glenlivet 12 and Laphroaig Quarter Cask as me two 'must have available at all time' evening drinks.

I'm not a real scotch drinker, but I was recently given a liter of JW Gold Label Reserve. I know it is a blend, has anyone tried this label?

Just bought a bottle of Highland Park 12 (on sale for $32 woohoo) and I'm liking it. Nice richness with just enough peat.

I have been itching to add scotch to my menu of indulgences. Normally I like Jamies and Makers, but I had the pleasure of tasting the JW Blue once and I've never forgotten it. I was certain at the time I did not like scotch, but at the cost I figured it should have the capacity to change my mind ...and it did? lol

When I am ready to buy my first bottle of a more moderately priced selection I will be sure to remember this thread. Thanks to all for posting your favorites so I can get some good ideas for my first bottle.

I am inclined to agree...
Cragganmore 12 is my preferred Speyside single malt.

Finished off an old, old bottle of 18 year old Glenmorangie the other day with friends. Forgot I had it in the back of the cabinet. It was so smooth, I'm sad it isn't produced anymore.
Here in Colorado Stranahans is worth your time. Otherwise I enjoy regular Glenmorangie, Oban, or the Macallan.

I just tried some Glenfarclas 21 this weekend, MAN is that good Scotch Whisky! Sweet from the oak and heavily peated. I have got to find more of this.

Magnificent Scotch chart there! I always liked Scotch, but really got more into it when socially drinking - my work crowd were heavy drinkers, and I'm a wimp with alcohol. Same thing with nic. I love the tastes, but not so much the aftereffects. I posed the problem to one of my sales managers, since I didn't want to seem unsociable after work, when we all had to be up early the next morning and hard at it. His excellent advice was to order a Scotch and water, then nurse it all night. There would be enough taste to be interesting and the color would make it apparent that I had something besides water in the glass. Plus he told me Scotch didn't deliver hangovers the way most bourbons did with me.
So over the years I've accumulated quite a few dozen single malts in the cabinet. Every time I went through a Duty Free at an airport, I would nab my allowance of interesting SMs.
A week ago, at the fabulous Philadelphia Flower Show, the Wine & Spirits Commission hosted a tasting, and now I have a new favorite: Laphroig Triple Wood, which makes the otherwise peatbomb 10YO taste like water.

I think we're going to have to add SAD, Scotch Acquisition Disorder or Spirit Acquisition Disorder, to the lexicon. Just what I need, another expensive hobby!

SAD Hmmm, I always fear I would come down with that if I were to start bringing scotch home. For now I'll stick with the Macallan 12 calling to me from the pub.

I rarely drink socially. Typically I'm in a mad scientific sort of mode when in the shop and there always a bottle of jw black. But that said. An average bottle will last me sometimes several YEARS. In the cabinet in the house I usually have a couple more popular selections for friends and poker nights ect. Not exclusive to scotch though. Currently I think there is a bottle of crown black, glevet 12, a bottle of Dow port, and a just in case bottle of mescow.
I really can't get into dewars. Tried several kinds and varieties offered and have been assured that THIS bottle would be excellent..only then think to myself I should be cleaning paint brushes with it rather than drinking it.
The jw red just never hits the spot. But like I said I just like a couple fingers depth and an ice cube for each. don't think I have ever beaten the ice cubes to the bottom of the glass.
Interesting thought just popped in my head. How many have dedicated glasses for their selections? Or am I just ocd.. Haha

My favorite drink of choice is on the back of the Martini-Rossi Sweet Vermouth bottle. It is two-parts blended Dewars White Label blended Scotch Whiskey and one-part Martini Sweet Vermouth. I drink a few every night!
It goes great with my Captain Bob's Blend!

While I take single malts (on a regular basis because I do love my single malts) with nothing but a drop of water to "bring out the nose" (as a Scots friend of mine likes to say), my martinis, good gin please, have nothing but a passing acquaintance with vermouth. A bottle of Martini and Rossi will last me so long for martinis that I've taken to writing the purchase date on them for interest's sake.
I also have SAD. My faves are the MacCallan, Edradour, Isle of Jura Superstition and Laphroiag when I'm going high class, the youngest Glenlivet when I'm slumming. The Aberlour, various Glenmorangies and Lagavulin sneak in for occasional tippling when I'm in scotch drinking times with my buddies.
