On the advice of the seller (I said I wanted a peated single malt), tonight I bought a bottle of Ledaig, an un-chilled filtered, single malt from the Isle of Mull. Cost was $48, on sale from $60. He was very enthusiastic about this Scotch. It seemed a personal favorite.

Maxx,
There is only one distillery on Mull & it reopened in 1990 after being closed off & on for yrs. It's known as Tobermory and has distilled single malt whisky under that name as well as Iona & Ledaig (which was the original name for the village where the distillery is located). The peatiness of the product always came from the water; the barley-malt was not peated. Since reopening they have tried to increase the peatiness of Ledaig.

Peat taste from water? Interesting. I see now on the Ledaig box it says "peat-dried malted barley is married with aromatic water". On the bottle it says "wonderfully peated".

To understand how peat can effect the barley-malt & therefore the final product in ways other than a fuel source maybe you should read up on how the peat bogs remove ions from the standing water making it softer & stains it brown by leaching tannins into the water. There is a whole lot more to the process other than smoke from a peat fire drying & therefore flavoring the barley.

For those of you who look to buy vintage distilled whisky like I do, it's caveat emptor when it comes to eBay & other whisky auctions.

Lagavulin 16. Simply the best hooch ever anywhere. Yes, I know, "tastes like a burned church." Not for everyone but . . . oh my.
Ardbeg 10 or Talisker are lovely as well.
