I really like that Culverhouse Tavern Scene - something about the candlelight, but why the hell are all four smokers holding their pipes sideways or even upside down?

I think it has to do with what else is consumed at the tavern besides the tobacco.

I don't do Pinterest, but a search of "Pipe Art" brought up this page, and there are literally hundreds of Pipe artworks and memorabilia here; notably the late great Norman Rockwell's works, which are replete with smoking pipes.

Did you notice the glow in each pipe? Maybe he was just proud of how he painted those cherries and had to get all the pipes at the right angle so that glow would shine.

Conlejm: Great find! I can't seem to pull any over here, so the link is perfect :)
And thanks Anthony! Beautiful stuff. I love the lighting.
Edgreen: Good to see you brought over the controversial painting. The edited version you posted was probably the best way to go ;)
I hear tobacco is pretty rare and prized in rural Mongolia. This guy must be very excited.

I like the Mongolian photos. I'd love to go to Mongolia; everything I read says they are very hospitable and kind. Bet first dude is ecstatic, I wonder what he's smoking. BTW, the currency in Mongolia is called Tugrugs. That will be yös Tugrugs, please. I don't know why that makes me happy.

I've been thinking about going to Mongolia since I went to India in 2010. I think it'll be a gift to myself after my master's. Though, since India, I've learned that other countries, no matter how they seem, usually are not a vacation. Fine by me. I've had it too good with tap water that doesn't give me the shits, anyways.

If you define 'vacation' as sitting around the hotel pool sipping Margaritas, and maybe visiting the tourist shops to buy some overpriced trinket-crap, a lot of other countries can be considered vacations.
If however, you go to meet the people, have adventures and LEARN something, then no, other countries are usually not vacations.
Travel light and be flexible!
PS I would guess it's not just tobacco that's rare and prized in rural Mongolia, but pretty much everything! 'Cept maybe wind. Or desert.

I still can't see how clay ever worked for a soldier. Those things break really easily and I don't see them hauling cases around to replace broken pipes when there is so much else that needs packing and transport.
