I'm going to have to take a day or two off because, after seeing over 30,000 pieces of art over the last week or so, my eyes are having a little trouble. It sure is nice being retired and being able to enjoy all the great works I've seen, whether they had a pipe or not.

That John George Brown edgreen threw up on his last post is just wonderful. A man, his work, his pipe, and his dog...beautiful. He reminds me of the most important roll models in my life. And those eyes are so calm and gentle, yet they also seem to chide the viewer, like he doesn't exactly want us in his shop or he wants to be alone in his work. He looks a good deal like my favorite high school teacher.
On that touching note, I couldn't resist posting this!!!

Those are great clay. I'm a little concerned for you that thinking of your favorite high school teacher reminded you of the spanker. :D

Portrait of Dr. Gachet – 1890 – Vincent Van Gogh

Dr. Gachet took care of Van Gogh the last months of his life. During that time he painted two portraits of Gachet (without pipe) and he also learned etching from the doctor, which makes this etching really special

Grant Batson posts pix with his sketches quite often...

www.instagram.com/grantbatson
...on a different note, but related to art, I did a thread a while back that had all kinds of different interpretations of Magritte's famous pipe painting --- there's a ton of 'em out there!

:)
Thanks for this GREAT THREAD Ed!!!

It is amazing!

If you were as confused as me by that Leopold Egg, with the dead looking wife on the floor and the kids playing cards, here's the skinny: The husband's clutching the letter which reveals his wife's infidelity, his right foot is on the portrait of her lover. The kids' house of cards is falling down, and the two paintings in the back show Adam and Eve getting kicked out of Eden over a portrait of the wife, and a shipwreck on the right labelled 'Abandoned' over the husband's portrait. The packed bag and umbrella near the door may signal her departure, if she's just fainted and not dead. Now I'm tired.

The pipe itself is the mystery to me. He has it right in the center of everything. Maybe the husband doesn't smoke a pipe?

Thanks for the explanation, simnettpratt. There's a lot going on in the Maw Egley as well, visually, at least. As far as I can tell, no one is having an affair inside the coach.

I liked the Omnibus painting too. It's supposed to have a lot going on - folks from all walks of life crammed into an omnibus trying not to look anyone in the eye. The lady in red on the left with the luggage is in old country woman's, possibly servant's clothes, the lady and the kids on the right are in fancy clothes.
Unfortunately, the pipe in the top hat city clerks' mouth in the back is supposed to be his cane. Here's a less-painted London omnibus from around 1902:
