Here's the new Pipe...!

K. Baysal's Bacchante, the female counterpart to Bacchus the Greek god of wine

and celebration. Baysal was a Master Carver of renown for many years, but alas

had no apprentice. His art has been noteworthy for both technical and creative

achievement. This is the only Pipe of his that I have in my modest collection.

It should be delivered to me shortly.

Thanks Bob. This Pipe arrived in the mail today. After the initial

cleaning to remove dust and open the draft, I'm planning to light it up

shortly. It will be my first experience with a coloring bowl...

As Vitor noted...Robert Cooper (coopersark on ebay) is a great merchant to deal with. He always ships very quickly and he is open, honest, and accurate in his descriptions of the pipes he has for auction.

I have purchased a few pipes from him and have not been disappointed. Definitely worth taking a look if you are having a PAD attack (assuming you can wait for the auction to end!)

Here a picture of the first briar pipe I have made, after stage one. Got a lot more sanding to do and finish but I thought I'd share it now and when I'm done. You guys try not to pick it too bad it is my first attempt.

I'm going to stain it, haven't settled on a shade yet. I'm open to suggestions.

Ziggy… those are some very special pipes.
Fred… you find the most amazing pieces.
Sapo... Wow it's really hard to believe that's your first… nice work, and regarding a stain color, I’m thinking a shade of maple would work well.

Very nice. I like the shape. Made me think Mario Grandi for some reason.
What kind of stain do you plan to use?
Leather dye is a common choice. Or the powdered stains that you add to lacquer thinner.
I also might play around with some minwax water based stains sold at the Depot, Lowe's etc. Here's the color chart (edit: won't link direct. Click on "colors" once you get there.

I've used them before on other wood projects and they are fun to play around with.
Some bold colors like you see on some Mario Grandi pipes.

I was thinking minwax then carnuaba wax. I look and see what the depot has on hand. I have a contractor account with them. I've finish alot of cabinets and furniture but never a pipe.

One thing Sapo.
From what I've read an typical oil base stain isn't suitable for a pipe. I guess since the oil doesn't evaporate off it penetrates the briar and stays there.
Was your pipe a "kit"? Where did you get it? I just got a predrilled block from PIMO because I was ordering the book anyway.
