He rarely has more than 2 or 3 unsold pipes on the website, the demand for his work is too great. I think it's primarily because he insists on keeping his pipes at an affordable level. If you compare his prices with those of other carvers of comparable talent you'll see that his are priced at half or less what you'd pay anywhere else. He wholesales a lot of his pipes to other shops and my understanding is that he pre-prices them all before they are shipped and that he won't tolerate a shop that jacks up the price. Since he has a long waiting list of shops that would love to carry his work, he gets his way.
I buy a lot of pipes on ebay and I can tell you that most of them sell for nearly the same price you'd pay retail for a new one. I don't know how this one slipped through the cracks and only cost me $29 but I'm looking forward to getting it in hand.
