I feel bad...P&C is really getting beat up in this forum lately (including by me) but man....they really gotta get their poop in a group. A horrid website, non-stop supply issues, bizarre price increases....I know there are changes coming but....I hope there are still people who want to do business when they get there!

You actually could backorder Esoterica items on the P&C website as recently as a few months ago. They had three status categories for items: In Stock, Backorder and Sold Out. They have since removed the backorder option for Esoterica, but I believe you can still backorder other brands. I did actually place a backorder for Esoterica's Dunbar which was subsequently cancelled due to their change in policy.
Personally, I have always had good experiences with P&C (other than this particular order being cancelled) and I agree that Russ is a tremendous friend to the community and a fantastic blender.

First of all, unless I missed something, we couldn't order Esoterica on back order at P&C anyway
Yes you could backorder Esoterica recently...
Of course, this may all be moot is the distributor and/or Germain has actually doubled the MSRP on Esoterica tobacco.
This is not even in question as I posted the response I received from P&C this morning early in the thread stating it was their decision.

Dervis, your line of thinking works until you lose your entire client base and you make zero dollars.
In the world of the internet, it makes sense to be competitive.
Now, is there a supply and demand issue with Esoterica that would allow you to justify a price increase? Sure. But with all of the weirdness going on over there, seems a very poorly timed move.

IMO, for anyone who had a backorder placed prior to the price increase, P&C really needs to come out with a statement to the effect of, “If you like your backorder, you can keep your backorder...period.”

So is it too early to summon the angry villagers with torches and pitchforks, to storm the castle and kill the monster? :nana:

Honestly I don't see any reason to continue to buy anything from P&C other than the blends they sell that no one else does like Plum Pudding or Blackhouse. I used to spend $100 religiously there every time I got paid, but I have tapered off and this is the last straw. I'm taking my business elsewhere. Smokingpipes, 4Noggins and other vendors get Esoterica blends in frequently enough that I have not had any issue stocking up. To me this price hike just shows utter contempt for the customer. Anyhow recently their inventory and selection has been a joke, for example GLP's Gaslight has been in stock at Smokingpipes at least 3 times that I have seen in the last two weeks. So I placed an order there. P&C still does not even have it listed on their website! What a shame they were a great vendor.

I thought smokingpipes carried the Hearth & Home blends. I don't think there is a single tobacco on the P&C site that cannot be purchased from another source. That being said, I have not used P&C since they stopped shipping internationally about 6 months ago. They made my choice for me!

I have noticed that P&C has not sold out of any of the newly listed Esoterica blends they posted since the price hike. I've never seen that before.

I've also noticed that Russ hasn't appeared to defend P&C and to tell us about all the other exciting new things P&C has planned, including cornering the market on pipe cleaners and raising the price threefold.

Freehand,
P&C has Gaslight, I ordered some yesterday.
A month or so ago UPS utterly smashed a large shipment from P&C. They (P&C) made things right immediately, no questions asked, despite the fact that the damage was entirely due to UPS's mishandling of the package. Sorry to hear you had a problem with them.
This thread is amusing. For a hobby devoted to relaxation and introspection there are apparently a lot of people who enjoy getting worked up over a simple price increase on a luxury item.

I didn't mean to imply you hadn't looked, just thought you might want to get some Gaslight. Call them on the phone, their website hasn't yet caught up. Annoying to have to call but a small price to pay to scratch the TAD itch for Gaslight.
I'm sure it will be some nice stuff. Pease never disappoints.

It may be, as was the case with the new Three Nuns and Capstans, that Smoking Pipes has an early exclusive.

I see we're back to bashing P&C, this time over a small brand with a handful of blends, most of which are available because they don’t sell. So this brings us to the two blends this is really about -- Penzance and Stonehaven. My estimates are that a third is picked up by the B&M retail shops, shop employees and friends. The second third by people who buy up Stonehaven and Penzance as a investment (like me), to sell them for profit. The last third are pipe smokers that actually smoke these blends themselves. For some reason other "retail" vendors are mentioned who allegedly haven't raised their prices on Esoterica, but few, if any of them have any in stock. Some people here claim inside information from vendors saying there won’t be a price increase on Esoterica. Show me who has Penznace or Stonehaven on their shelves now, or when it's restocked for under $30 and I will buy every bag.
Bashing P&C, as I have seen in this thread -- a PM Forums sponsor and vendor that has done more than any other company, in so many ways, saddens me. P&C offers us what no other company does. They sell more pipe tobacco then all the others combined. They take back orders locking in the price, shipping back ordered items as they come in with no extra charge for shipping. I know that two of my orders for $100 required three shipments, with P&C taking a loss completing those orders. They have more brands and blends than any other vendor. Many posts here on PM Forums mention Russ Ouelette as a great Master Blender and Russ' hand blended Hearth & Home pipe tobaccos with over 80 blends, all at great prices, who also became the backbone and the face of P&C to many of us. Russ stayed with P&C as the company was sold and relocated from NY to PA. So the price is raised on a small brand that actually is two blends for most of us, available a couple times a year in small quantities. What about P&C for a while now offering Hearth & Home Signature Series blends at $24 a pound (buy two 8oz. cans, the third is free, mix or match)? BTW, this sale is good until tomorrow (Nov. 14) just in case you want to buy some, even if a blend you want is on back order. In December all H&H brand, cans or bulk, is 20% off. P&C constantly is running one or more promotions on brand name pipes and pipe tobaccos, brands that most of us actually smoke and enjoy. Their customer service, which in all my purchases have had two problems that were from production, nothing under their control. Did I need to send the product back first? No. Replacement items were sent out the next day postage paid along with a pre-paid shipping label to return the problem tins. When I was unhappy with this large multiple tin buy, all it took was an Email and a five minute phone call. I received much more in dollar value to make up for this; they even sent along a surprise. I had a problem with my order and P&C took care of it -- My word was good enough.
So there is my rant thread on this “big viral” attack on P&C. I don't believe we should all jump on a band wagon because of a few people making a mountain out of $25. If Esoterica makes your blend and it's sold at some B&M or online vendor for less, buy it, that’s what most people do. I've delineated a bunch of reasons why P&C is my #1 choice for pipe tobacco. No vendor is perfect, but P&C has gone the extra mile for me, I love their back order policy with no additional shipping, so I am and will remain a loyal P&C customer.

Craig. If you want to help out P&C, letting everybody know you're one of those helping to cause this by being the pipe equivalent of a ticket scalper is not a good way to get it done.

An understandable difference of opinion but scalpers are just that and have had their detractors for centuries. In my opinion someone who buys something, does work on it, and sells for a higher price is getting paid for their work. Someone who buys an item with the express purpose of charging someone else more for not being fast enough is an opportunist and not someone I will look up to. There are differences to someone like me who values honesty and integrity over making a quick buck off someone who isn't as fast as you.

Roth, I agree 100%! Russ is a class act, a real stand up guy! He's bent over backwards for us many times, but like you said, he can't fix everything! I'm sure Russ isn't exactly thrilled with the goings on at P&C right now either. They have taken a beating here lately, and as much as I hate to say it, some of it was probably deserved. But I know that Russ is not to blame for any of it, I just hate that he gets caught in the middle all the time. It's nice to have him around, it's not often that you can openly discuss issues with a guy in his position at the company. We shouldn't take him for granted! It does suck that prices are going up, and I fear that it will get worse, not only at P&C, but everywhere. For the time being, I guess it's a good thing I don't like Esoterica blend, because I wouldn't pay those prices!
