As far as simpler, I'm not sure about that. Perhaps in some ways it was, but young people post-'60s have never had to deal with being drafted into a Viet Nam. I'm certainly glad I was too young to have to deal with that. I suspect that would have the effect of greatly complicating the lives of young people these days if that were to occur again.
As someone who lived in the 60s, let me say that in some ways life back there was simpler. Yes we had to deal with the draft (I beat the draft by enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1972. One brother in law who did two tours in Nam calls me one of the ultimate draft dodgers). but on the other hand we weren't too concerned about having to watch everything we said and weigh whether or not we would offend anyone. We also had more self discipline back then and more of us understood that if we did something wrong there would be consequences unlike the post 70s when this country became full of people who were taught it was someone else's fault.
Was it simpler back then? We didn't have the internet. Most people didn't have cable or satellite tv with 100s of useless channels. We actually had shopping districts in downtown area. And, the news media was only just beginning to believe that they could run (ruin) this country by preaching stories that only showed their bias beliefs.
Now, we can shop, pay bills, do banking and hold conversations without leaving the comfort of our keyboard or couch. We don't have to look at someone when we are texting them while sitting maybe 5 feet away from them. We don't have to accept responsibility for knowing what is really going on in the world because we just have to look at Twitter and Facebook and see what celebrities are telling us what we need to know. We've become couch potatoes who have to stay in shape by going to health clubs.
There are a number of other "good things" about life today. For example, we now have the government telling us that smoking is bad and we can't smoke indoors in bars, restaurants, casinos or even in our own homes, apartments or autos. That makes it simpler because all we have to do is what the government tells us.
As for music, there were good music back in the 60s and I don't find all of it to be empty. Maybe some of it from the early 60s (Beach Boys, for example) but towards the later part of the decade it started getting better and it carried into the 70s.

billkay - I had written a very articulate response then lost it somehow. Damn interwebs! It was way past my bedtime anyway. What I meant to say was I could not get past the Zimmerman "fake" Jewish ancestry part to absorb the whole article. It was particularly offsetting that the author was asking more questions (in my mind) than he was answering on that topic and frankly I didn't like where it was going. The fact it was about fraternities is a complete surprise.
I can't believe you guys are still talking. I thought we sorted this out. I was right, and everyone else was wrong, didn't you read the memo?
I don't read memos. If you guys could just paraphrase what you want me to know from a memo instead of just assuming I'll read them, life would be simpler. :)
John Prine is cool.
John Hartford is awesome. My Grandfather, who was a river boat captain, said he was one of the nicest fellas you could ever meet. He loved John's music with a passion. RIP guys

Memo= a paraphrased written message, usually condensing a larger written policy or administrative issues.
Yup, that was the joke. I put a smiley face and everything. Is this thing on....? (tap, tap)

I was going to say nounally, but it sounds funny. Literately didn't occur to me. Epistolarily seemed too scholarly. I blame William Gibson and cyberspace for mixing my lexical and grammatical items.
Cause we ARE talking...... 8O

Do we get an award when this thread hits 10 pages?
If this abomination reaches 10 pages, everyone who has more than 1 post in it must be stoned!

'67 HS grad here.. '69 Paris Island grad as a draftee. 18 month RVN grad. I call BS on anyone who think's the 60's were a cake-walk. Up on the LZ when those brats at Kent State were shot there was cheering and extra pallets of beer flown in. Some of you guys just love to hear your own BS. If 20 guys said the turd was brown you guys would argue it was light brown.

Nobody said life in the military was a cake walk. Life in the military wasn't a cakewalk during the 21 years I was in. Life in the military isn't a cake walk now either. But I don't think we were talking about military life.

I never said the 60's were a cakewalk, militarily or otherwise. JFK, MLK, Race Riots, Nixon, Rumsfeld and Cheney, Coming off Korea into Vietnam. No, it was not an easy time, and people like my Cousins, Uncles, Grandfather and Great Uncle who served in every war since WWII (my family has fought in every war since the Revolution) paid the price for the Congressional Military Industrial Complex's thirst for blood. Shooting teenage boys and girls is cause for celebration? That turd looks dark brown to me. I was just a few months old when Kent State happened. THAT was the world I was born into. I HATE warmongers.
