Top of this page and the one before, the sixties were mentioned. TLDR. I think it was in reference to music. Somebody called it "simpler times" socially. I disagree. I feel the music was better all around. Country went nuts over the war and civil rights and that's when media control began. When Cheney was in office last, he didn't allow pics of soldiers coming back in coffins. Out of sight out of mind.
Cobguy- You a Hoosier too? My woman is a Buckeye.

I'm pretty sure their parents, wifes & kids appreciated them not being made a spectacle. Did you happen to hear your great savior in now putting ground troops into Syria.

@brian64 - Being wise had nothing to do with me joining the Coast Guard. Neither did the draft as my draft number meant I had less than a 25% chance of getting a notice. I joined because the Coast Guard was primarily concerned with saving lives.

The active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines all voted 2/3 plus against the current commander in chief. Let's not let politics and idiotic nonsense pollute this thread. BTW, you don't want to upset the member with Cheney-phobia, he is 6'7" and 300 pounds or whatever and will beat you up if you upset him.

Ironically the most Anti-War people I know are all former military. It has something to do with surviving war and not wanting anyone else to have to go through it. On the other hand, many of them would be the first to volunteer because of their sense of duty.

Ok, I stand corrected if neither wisdom or the draft had anything to do with it. I got that impression from your comment:
Yes we had to deal with the draft (I beat the draft by enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1972.
Again just my opinion (and we all know what that's worth) but I consider that a wise thing to do at that particular time. Saving lives is always wise too. Plus guarding the coast is always a legitimate function of government, unlike so much else that is done.

Just to be clear I'm 9 feet tall and weigh 1100 pounds now. (I'll never live that down) I have no savior. I just don't like Cheney. Opinions are still allowed right? The idea of a draft dodger profiting from war sickens me. Mods- this is military history not politics. Troops in Syria is a bad idea. Cheney didn't allow FAMILIES to take pictures of their loved one's coffins. Doesn't seem like spectacle to me.

That is their right as Americans and I fully support it.

@brian64 - The beating the draft comment came from a couple of friends who were drafted and did a tour in Viet Nam. They always said I was smarter than them.

In fact, I also know at least three fellow Coast Guardsmen who were drafted, did a tour in Viet Nam and switched to the Coast Guard when their initial enlistment was up.
There were a lot of guys in boot camp with me who thought it was wise also and they said it was either the Coast Guard or the draft.
