Cosmic - I was thinking of rap, hip-hop and what passes for current pop and rock music. Even the country music of today pales in comparison of the country music from the 60s - 70s.
I think billkay just insulted those of us living in the south.

Yeh, I was being sarcastic. Of course, there isn't any real music these days, ha ha.

We've got ways of dealing with that down here. :puffy:

current modern day music makes Canned Heat, Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead sound like Beethoven and Mozart

That's because the older stuff was authentic...real musicians, writers and singers who made their own start. The modern commercial "music" of all genres is mostly created by corporate staff time-clock punchers somewhere. And "digitally enhanced" performances to make singers who can't sing sound better (which is why they have to lip-sync at the live shows, which seems to be perfectly acceptable now). And who knows what else they do to produce the stuff.
There are plenty of more modern solo artists and bands that are authentic as well...but they just don't achieve commercial success the way they did in the past...because the industry doesn't allow it.

Brian64 - that's why I listen to a lot of independent and small label music. For some reason Blues has not be infected by the disease of commercialism so I listen to a lot of blues also.

Good for you !! Because of the internet the big labels don't have as much power anymore. You can buy almost any song on Itunes for a buck and depending on contracts it can mostly go to the artist. The smaller labels have as much presence on the web as the big boys. Fan driven music is getting bigger and approaching a golden age. I have no idea what constitutes Pop music anymore, other than it being popular.
One of my current favorite bands began as a virtual band with a core group and lots of special guests on each album. It has some hip hop elements but is mostly rock and definitely hard to pin down genre wise.
I loved Johnny Carson and David Letterman should have taken over the Tonight Show, NOT Leno.

I've listened to Canned Heat and Janis Jopin most of my life.

Bluegrass is beautiful and thank the gods for Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe. Steve Martin is no slouch on the banjo these days.

Mayfair - I've spent a lot of money on iTunes and eMusic.com. My playlists run from Aaron Neville to ZZ Top and is filled with bands like Alabama Shakes, Honey Island Swamp Band and The Love Leigh's.

The "when are beards 'cool' and when are they not?" question is solidly rooted in species selection. (No, I'm not kidding):

Do hipsters listen to Canned Heat? Do they even know who Canned Heat is/was?
To answer a legitimate question: yes, almost certainly. Hipsters value anything undiscovered from any era. The point is to be unique or at least different.
This even reached into classical/baroque music when hipsters discovered Corelli. Too bad for them, many of us enjoy his music anyway.

Gosh! Pop music is dumbed down, formulaic tripe made by the same producers that all sounds the same? I could have told you that in 1983.
