Keep posting and only once got answers! Based in Dublin, Ireland. New to pipe smoking. Have smoked a few of my pipes to the point of them being very hot. Have then put them down to cool for fear of destroying my investment. Wondering firstly, if because they've gotten so hot are they ruined or should I just be be more careful in future? Secondly, have smoked tens of bowls in my peterson pipes and only gotten a great flavour (sweet, nutty) a couple of times - does this mean they are just taking time to break in and will eventually season?

Went to the local Tabacs here today all they had was a few different Borkum Riff and Alsbo Cherry I know you can get a few others out here like Condor and St Bruno
But I think my options are limited as Online sales of Tobacco are Banned here
Only saving grace is the prices its only €5.30 for a 50g pack !
I will continue my research in the Larger Tabacs
Off to UK next month on holiday and we are stopping North Yorkshire and Lake District and a quick internet search reveals some great outlets
So I will have to indulge myself in a few samples !

Greetings all. I joined awhile ago but didn't post. The radio show brought me here initially. I have casually smoke a pipe nearly 10 years, bUT seriously for a year and a half. I love Latakia, Kaywoodie pipes, Morgan Pipes, and a whole lot of artisan carvers. Looking forward to the company here without some of the Facebook nonsense that sometimes crops up.
Greetings! I've been dabbling with the briar for a few years now, but I'm as new as they get. I've got a couple cobs and a wicker basket pipe that I've tried to play around with, some bowls have been great and I feel like I'm getting it, some bowls are a real struggle and a chore to finish. I'm still at the stage of tasting mostly smoke but once in a while I am able to taste some flavour. I enjoy the relaxing experience of a good bowl, and I look forward to increasing the frequency of these. I bought a new Brigham pipe earlier this week but I haven't made the chance to try it out yet. I am encouraged by reading through this forum and how much flavour the experienced pipers are able to taste. I wish I watched my Grandpa more closely as he was puffing away when I was a kid. It's a solo hobby for me at the moment and the wife doesn't approve so my bowls are not as often as I would like. Cheers!

I've been smoking pipes off and on for some 45 years. Back when that was acceptable in the workplace, I was once smoking some chocolate tobacco and a woman colleague said she was suddenly feeling hungry ;-)
For the past few years I've mostly been smoking on long drives - anything over an hour for me. I find that it makes me both more alert and relaxed simultaneously.
For no known reason I started smoking more often about a month ago, and also acquired a bad case of PAD at the same time. After about a week of trolling eBay, I realized there were far, far too many pretty pipes out there, and managed to quit cold turkey - well, almost.
I'm smoked 1Q for the last half-dozen years, but after looking through various forums, decided I should try a non-aromatic product. I bought a tin of Dunhill 965, but my early tries have not been positive. However, two days ago I was able to smoke a small bowl using only two matches. I do find it quite a bit harsher, so don't know if I'll get through the tin or not.
I've been used to stuffing as much 1Q in the bowl as would fit. I don't know if it's orthodox or not, but my lighting technique has been to draw the flame down as far as I can, on the theory that since heat rises getting it down to the bottom initially would keep things going unattended. I have discovered that I was needlessly tamping far more than I need to.
I have bought a few relatively inexpensive estate pipes, with the thought of possibly making minor modifications to the bowl exteriors. One of them is a Masterson, and I came across an article on this site about restoring one. It may not have been the same fellow, but I found a comment about possibly sanding out the lines on the bowl surface. I'm considering an alternate approach of staining them a bright red.
There seems to be a divide between those who take a pipe apart to use a pipe cleaner and those who do not. However, the nastiest stuff is always in or near the bottom of the chamber, so if you're inserting the pipe cleaner through the whole pipe, you're just dragging that residue through the stem and lip, and likely depositing some of it in the process.
I'm a sculpture major, so tend to admire freehand pipes, but find many of the current crop of artsy pipes too ugly and/or bizarre for my tastes. I have discovered that I do prefer large bowls if not pipes - I had bought a pickaxe that I later resold, as the bowl was just too small to grip comfortably.
However, I was fascinated by this Jack Weinberger pipe, which I suppose could be considered a sort of pickaxe - or would that be a vertical fan?
Oh yes - someone asked about how people found this forum. I found many forums when I was searching for answers to the many questions I had, including looking up well known pipe makers of the past and/or present, and sources for supplies. As far as why I joined here - I can't stand cigars, so wanted to make sure I was on a pipes only site ;-) I have also applied to the Pipe Smokers Forum.

Just joined this jont. I've been smoking a pipe for quite a while. I think I got my first one in a drug store in Pittsburg PA (a Dr Grabow), and spent a few years puffin' on drugstore brands til I got my first apartment in 2001, which was 2 blocks away from the historic DeMuth's Tobacco Shop in downtown Lancaster City, PA. That's when I got a little more serious about the pipe, but I'd say I didn't REALLY get into it til a few years ago after meeting a fly fishing buddy (who I believe lurks around here, Les Trout) who started slippin' me tins of tobacco every time he'd see me. Les really helped me hone in my preferences for tobacco, and was the first one to show me that latakia is actually quite tasty when smoked with a glass of Scotch!
Apart from the pipe, I'm a family man (married, 3 young children between the ages of 7 and 18mos old), an avid fly fisherman (my true passion apart from family), and am currently pursuing ordination as a Presbyterian minister in the Presbyterian Church in America (finishing my masters at Covenant Theological Seminary as we speak, and am hoping to take my licensure exams this Fall).
Glad to be part of this board

Hello everyone, I've been an observer for about two years now and just recently decided start to becoming an active member of this forum. I've gained a wealth knowledge from everyone in this forum and I thank you all for that. I've been smoking for about two years now, but smoked cigarettes for a long time before. I quit cigarettes for a while then got into cigars and then pipes. I now smoke both pipes and cigars. My favorite tobaccos are Latakia flakes, aged Virginias, and I'm even partial to several aromatics. I just wanted to jump in, cause who knows I might post something someday that could help another like me when I was starting out.

I really enjoy just about everything ive tried so far. a couple of my favorites are the Solani aged burley flakes, Squadron Leader, Dunhill EMP, Lane 1Q and BCA.
