The time has come for March Meerschaum Madness. As we've reached the eve of this month-long event.

For those unaware of this, the idea is for those that have one or two meerschaum pipes in their collection, and rarely smoke them, to pull them off the rack and enjoy them. It's an opportunity to explore what a meerschaum pipe can really offer to the pipe smoker.

For those of us that smoke meerschaum pipes regularly and have multiple pipes in your collection, the idea is to smoke those few meerschaum pipes that never really make it into your regular rotation. It's a good way to explore a neglected pipe and see what it can offer you and possibly make its way into the rotation.

For those that don't own a meerschaum pipe it's an opportunity to maybe venture into buying one and exploring a new style of pipe and see what it can offer you.

I went from only having 1 meerschaum to building up my collection to 23. I've got pipes from a variety of makers and companies, and in all different styles. The problem I have is that with so many meerschaums it's hard to smoke them all, and there are several that rarely get smoked. This makes it hard to color them, but I'm working on it.

They take a while to break in. The first several smokes will mute the flavor until the meerschaum starts to soak up oils from the tobacco.

First smoke today was in my translucent Altinay, as it is almost every day. Very comfortable clencher and smokes wonderfully:


Second was this Altinay dublin that is almost a nose warmer. Another comfortable clencher and smokes great. Don't have a current pic but this was the stock pic:



Third and current smoke for today is also just the third time smoking the Yanik Buffalo. I'm happy to report it smokes great, and is such a joy to hold and look at. Only problem is it's a pain to clean due to the drilling. And I'm actually considering using the water method on this one believe it or not. May be the only simple solution.

I used Clapham's and a heat gun. Claphams has beeswax and a little Carnauba.

Is that an Andreas Bauer? I have one just like it with the 'AB' stamp on the ferrule. I've seen the ones with 'Austria' stamped in the same area, sold as Bauers. Also have heard that the ones made before the name was sold to a company in Turkey, are perhaps made better? (like yours).

Now I'm wondering what the Vanilla, Cherry and Grape versions of it are called.

An old YouTuber named Joffre the Giant created this blend at his pipe shop when they were having a pipe tobacco blending contest. It won, and I believe the shop still sells it. He gave out his recipe on his YT channel, and multiple have copied the blend over the years. I got this blend from a friend that copied the recipe. I think it has 1Q and Latakia and maybe something else. Terrible name but it's pretty good.

Without the "AB" stamp it is just an assumption.
However all the Bauer gourd calabashes I have seen sport the same distinctive briar ferrule
