Our discussion of Heritage pipes got me thinking about the grade at which they were marketed. I have often heard that they were an upscale pipe, or at least aspired to be. This advertisement, however, makes me wonder what Kaywoodie, actually S.M. Frank by that time, were attempting. Everything about the description sounds high end until you get to the pricing (in 1960s dollars).

Assuming 1961 as the year for that pricing (a generous assumption considering that this brand probably did not appear until later), a Heritage Heirloom pipe would be priced at $106.89 in 2014 dollars, all other things being equal. Certainly that is not bottom-basement pricing, but it is not even Peterson money in today's market.
Do not get me wrong, I have a couple of Heritage pipes that are attractive and well-built. I am just not sure what the goal of the line was. Whatever the goal was, the short life of the line suggests it was not achieved. Maybe they should have priced them higher to burnish a snobbish image.
