I didn't get what you were pointing out but I just looked up Sasieni and realize that this is an Eight Dot. What would this have been worth if it had been identified properly as such?

I can totally see that too, and how I hope it is. To have one that late would be amazing! However I fear it might be a “b” 1969.
it looks like an upper case B with a slant to the right to me.
1969 was lower case .

meerschaum petes from tanzania were definitely still being sold in 1987 as I first started trying to smoke a pipe in 1987 and bought a meerschaum pete new ,not the aboriginal rustication but a sort of sandblast finish.Laxey who made them closed in the early 2000s

I have gone back to look at the pics and you are 100% correct. I had overlooked the slant of the letter. This is exciting news. I knew that the smooth finishes and the tawny (rusticated) were available then but I didn’t think the Aboriginal line survived beyond the early 70s

I wasnt aware that there was possibly a difference in date depending on the finish.
I don't like the aboriginal finish so didn't take much notice back then

I'm no expert but $25 was probably too much. I wonder if we'll soon see that stem on another pipe.

Is the stem the only way to know if it's a higher or lower grade pipe? I hope someone doesn't put that stem on a lower end pipe and try to pass it off as an 8 dot.

Bro I was born in 89 so I know jack shit compared to you more…ergh, seasoned Pete freaks. My observations are made from the ones I’ve looked at, all late 60s/early 70s.

The dots aren't indicative of quality. They were created for the US market, strictly to allow the four dot logo to be visible from both sides, strictly a marketing gimmick.

So some of the pipes with 8 dots are actually stamped 'four dot'? (I say "some" because my 8 dot is not).
Sasieni did not use a "4 Dot" stamp during the period when they produced 8 dot stems. That "4 dot" stamp is post war. Eight dots disappeared during the war. If you see an 8 dot stem on a pipe stamped with a "4 dot" stamp it's one of several things. Wht it is not, is original to the pipe. It could be a kluge of genuine Sasieni materials, it could be a fake, as in a third party 8 dot, such as a loudmouthed controversial eBay seller was passing off on a churchwarden that never seemed to sell. What you won't see is a genuine from the factory Sasieni combining a "4 dot" stamp with an 8 dot stem.

However, the successor company did some "revivals" of the older stampings and I've seen some of these passed off as earlier production on eBay.

Yes, thanks. I was really more curious about the 'four dot' stamp (as opposed to the '4 dot'), as the 'four dot' stamp was used before the war, as were the '8 dot' stems.

If the 8 dots were just marketing, then there would be nothing wrong with 8 dots on a shank that was stamped 'four dot'.

Dl you have a picture? I'd like to see that. I've never seen a pre war Sasieni with a "four dot" stamp on it
