The seller ( a most congenial gentleman ) and I discussed this pipe.
It peaked my interest ( understatement ), but I also noticed the tenon had been worked on, or replaced.
The seller kindly posted some more pictures of the chamber . He accepts returns, so I decided to take my chances, but the end of auction bidding frenzy put me off .
Very nice and rare 1917/1918 Dunnie . Mind the "non existent " patentnr. and the H.W. stamp.

Wonderful pipe, good job on the resto.There were two of these churchwardens. One had a repair band. I asked the seller for a photo of the top of the stem of the other one, and both actually had the Dunhill dot. Great deal, just not my style of pipe.
This one, on the other hand, was right up my alley - 6" 1925 dublin. Arrived yesterday and finished restoration this morning - original finish, excellent chamber, horrible oxidation. The grain is fabulous. Came with a long inner tube as well.

Not eBay listings (yet, although I bet that is where they end up), but there was a huge number of old unsmoked pipes auctioned in the UK today. I've attached some pictures as examples, but there were many more lots. I can't see the hammer prices yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if these end up on eBay. They were all 1900s to 1920s, barlings, loewes, petersons, GBDs, etc., All unsmoked.

At the prices they went for, I'd say there isn't much margin for resale. These seemed to be collectors bidding collector prices. I can tell you, for my part, that the ones I managed to win won't be going to eBay.... at least not for a few decades, if I can help it.
That's good to hear. I couldn't see the hammer prices, but I'm really glad they went to collectors. Out of interest, which ones did you manage to get? Do you know if there was any indication of where they came from - someone's collection, old stock found somewhere etc.?
Often I see those auction lots ending up on eBay - I don't mind, people have to make money.
Oh they went high---around £500 or thereabouts for each cased individual pipe. I don't think a reseller will see much margin above that. I prioritized my bids long beforehand. The Imperial ITC was rare and yet did not garner the attention that the other brands did, so it was a below-average hammer. My top priority was the second lot of virgin briars with amber stems in the Barling box. Even the box they were in is a treasure!
The photos from the auctioneer were blurry so there are a few guesses as to what exactly was in the lot, but once I get hold of them I'll absolutely photograph them. I don't plan on splitting them up either, as they were apparently found that was at the shuttered tobacconist. I need to track down further information on their background.
Incredible, oh to have been there when they discovered them... 'Those old pipes? I'll give you a tenner each for them'.

Stem
The oxidation did not look bad, but what was there did not want to leave. I soaked in an Oxiclean solution, overnight. Then scrubbed with Magic Eraser/alcohol, then 600 grit, then full micromesh progression. Basically, the stem got everything I could throw at it. It was tempting to make this a 'perfect' pipe, but I try to avoid such temptations, especially if it's never going to be sold. So I allowed three very tiny marks to remain, as opposed to filling with CA glue.
Stummel
The stummel was in great shape - it had the appearance of original finish, so I didn't want to lose any of it. The rim had more carbonization than I was happy with, and there was/is some nicking along the rim. I wanted to leave it as original as possible, so, after scraping off the rim, sanded lightly to remove most of the remaining char and roughness, but not enough to have to use a stain pen, and I didn't mess with the nicking. Then rubbed in B&A Balm to clean. Had to do that three times, but the B&A Balm cleans well and doesn't mess with the finish. I buffed by hand - didn't add any wax.
