Someone with actual skills doing the stem replacement, like George.

(insert big thumbs-up here) But...I see disastrous pipe restorations on ebay all the time, where people who want the pipe to be something it isn't (like 1/4" NOT expertly taken off the top), pay top dollar. Fools are parted from their money all the time.

These two items are not British pipes, but the Peterson Patent tools are 'British Made', and the Dunhill reamers are made in Austria by a British company. I 'had to have' a Patent tool and the Dunhill reamers were irresistible for reasons I can't explain.

Someone with actual skills doing the stem replacement, like George. He can flush fit anything he wants to tackle, and flawlessly reproduce a factory's own quirks, if needs be. The average bozo will make a shambles of it. Just getting the dots correct is no small feat. It's one of the ways I can spot a fake, and they do show up from time to time.
Well, that was kind of my point...

If one was to take two pipes, manufactured one right after the other, and switch the stems. in most cases the shank/stem transition would not match up. There would be small differences that could be seen or felt.

Not that would stop somebody from trying to "fake" something. in this case trying to match an unoriginal stem to a stummel. But the onus is on the buyer to recognize this type of fuckery.

As for "average bozo" pipe "restoration", it's become a cottage industry in the last few years. They even have their own FB Group. Sad part is that there are people that think it's like assembling and disassembling Legos, and end up devaluing some nice old pipes.

Yep! Truer words...

Faked Sasieni 8 dots are very easy to spot. Drilling that logo took a lot of time to master and the fakes on eBay look like they were done by someone wearing a blindfold

Speaking of Sasieni's, this seller accepted my modest offer on his BIN listing for this Four Dot Walnut "Moreton" (near Merseyside on the map). I had never heard of this town shape. It's post-WWII, so I didn't expect to find it in my 1936 catalog but it's also not shown in my 1951 catalog. If anyone has a catalog scan showing this shape, shoot me a copy for my Reborn Pipes blog write-up please. I did find another example sold by SmokingPipes.

This very rare GBD Oom-Paul shape did quite well. I'm not sure that the stem is original, however the button would point to a 1920's to 1930's era.

Mark Irwin did quite well selling this 2005 140th Anniversary pipe.

Wow, he sure did! I just read about this pipe in the Peterson book. I do hope they eventually make a faithful replica of Charles's favorite O1.

That's crazy money - I expected it to go for ~$300.

I would also like to see that, but it was just too big of a pipe for that to ever happen. I have an O1 and an O2, and they are monsters.

But the good news is that they seem to like the 'historical pipe' idea for the POTY. I look forward to this year's design.

Do you have a pic of one beside a 314, a pipe tool, or a zippo? They do look huge but it's hard to get a feel for the pipe's size from photos.

Also, have any artisans done accurate replicas of old Petes (as opposed to homages)? I'm sure it isn't easy as the 9BC POTY shows.

This might help: my 'Mark Twain' lookalikes with the O1 at top, and a Mark Twain below it (same size as the 2022 POTY)

OK yeah that puts it into context. I haven't seen an MT in person but compared the dimensions with a 312 and they are of a similar size. Does that put the O1 at like 4" tall?

Who am I to complain :

It looks a little sad, but for a mere $120,00 I,m happy to give it some really heartfelt TLC.
