Vegas Baby!!!
Here’s a pipe I grabbed. I have zero regrets.

1892 Pete. It’s real. Unlike the reproduction they sold at over half the price. Some idiot is bragging about a stummel in need of a stem for a pipe that worth less than half what they paid.

That’s the crack equivalent of buying meth instead.

Kind of hard to ignore was the Sunday auction of what may well be the most pristine, virtually unsmoked example of a 1926 Dunhill LC (with both a completely legible reg number on its stem and perfectly crisp nomenclature) ever to emerge "from the wild." It is moreover a lovely example (perfectly proportioned, with a beautiful shell blast), well worth (if anything is) the $3300 it fetched. s-l1600.jpgs-l400.png

A deadman’s pipe for sure, destined to pass from hand to hand as one owner croaks and a new one succeeds him. Perhaps when smoking has been entirely suppressed it will wind up on a plinth in a museum somewhere, boxed in bulletproof glass and bearing a tasteful label executed by hand in calligraphy. Or perhaps its original purpose will be wholly forgotten and it will be worshipped as a mysterious and awesome fetish by generations yet unborn. Or perhaps it will be tossed in a dumpster by the owner’s heirs, acting out of resentment, ignorance, or malice.

What's the fun of being an heir, if you cannot finally allow yourself to act out/cast off/free yourself of all those interminably long decades of bottled-up resentment, ignorance and malice. . . ? I could go on.

Jon,

You're such a sentimentalist.

Pretty much any liquid that's mildly acidic (vinegar, for example) that isn't wiped off quickly enough will leave a bleached spot like that.

Let's see....

-- English pipe

-- Fish 'n' Chips is popular in England

-- Vinegar is a big part of The Fish 'n' Chips Experience

-- Fish 'n' Chips is not eaten with silverware

-- 85% of earth's population is right handed

-- The bleached area is where a thumb usually contacts a bowl when right handedness is in play

Only Jon Guss and his superhuman historical research skills can ever know what ACTUALLY happened of course (he'll be able to tell you the day it happened, and whether the pipe's owner was married or not as well as the name of his dog), but until then, something like the vinegar scenario will have to do.
