YT is essentially an amateur format and the content often reflects that. Pipe and tobacco presentations tend to ramble often pointlessly. If YT presenters want to be taken seriously much more thought and preparation will be required. Sables point is right on, you can't successfully turn a 60 second feature into a twenty minute broadcast and expect it to be captivating. When you do that the result is a lot of extraneous nonsense. Motives aside, the content on pipe smoking YT presentations is lacking and all the complaining in the world won't change that. It's an open forum and anyone can post without regard to the quality. Serious pipe smokers find most of it a bit amateurish and their attitudes reflect that. I have seen some great stuff on YT but unfortunately not in the pipe smoking department. Most lacks content and continuity, for the most part it's just unstructured ramblings.

I went and got the clip but didn't get the chance in the other thread.
Personally I think most of the Pipesmokers on youtube are reasonably enjoyable.
But, this is the Internet...

(Darn it, my favorite clip doesn't like hotlinking, but then I found THIS!)
OOH IT'S SO CUTE!

The parakeet was cool. Maybe if the YTPC used parakeets to get their message across in a few words?

I'm listening to the response vid as I type, valid points made. I don't get the hostility, it goes to show how the "brotherhood" is kind of a myth.

I reject the notion that failure to enjoy videos indicates the viewer is bad, rather than the presentation bad.

Someone fill me in please. I ducked out to fix a broken airplane really quick, and when I came back, the "response" thread seems to be gone. What did I miss this time?

I used to watch YouTube pipe videos frequently and I really enjoyed a few of the presenters. I don't necessarily mind if they're a bit rambling sometimes - some people have naturally engaging personalities and are good to spend time with, even with the pauses and digressions. Sadly the presenters I liked all stopped making videos a few years ago and I didn't find any others that I can listen to. Tamper Peterson was great, and Astroman2112, the American in Thailand. Charles Goodspeed too, sometimes, in his home pub, the Green Lantern. But even if I don't find any of the current crop as enjoyable I am glad to know there's still a pipe community on YouTube. It can be a nice way to connect with people and get to know them in a way that you just can't on a text forum like this.
Here's an old Tamper Peterson video. About ten minutes and slow-paced, but I just liked the guy. He used to be on another pipe forum as well and was always entertaining. He has a broad Scottish accent though so some of you might struggle with it.

I found a really useful video on rolling smokes once. The guy had an accent thick as cheese, but he showed what he was doing really well (w/o pro gear, impressively). Helped immensely.

I have seen several members post YT video's on this forum for new people who are trying to learn about pipe smoking. That being said, if your video was informative and had value to the pipe smoking community overall, then it has probably been posted on this forum at some point. If not then maybe it was for good reason. I have watched several of these YT videos and some were total crap, others were informative and I learned something from them. Sablebrush is correct though IMO, if you don't engage me in the first 10 seconds, I'm moving on. I have probably learned more from this forum than anywhere else. It's so easy, how can you not? Type a subject into the search engine and you get a plethora of information, in fact I usually have my question answered in first thread or two that I click on, YMMV.

So the problem is not videos itself, or YouTube per se, but the quality of some videos?
Should be easy for this loquacious group to come up with some suggestions for how to improve them :)

YTPC videos remind me of a quote from "Ratatouille".
Gusteau: What do I always say? Anyone can cook!

Remy: Well, yeah, anyone "can", that doesn't mean that anyone "should".
Anyone "can" post a video of themselves smoking a pipe on Youtube.

There's a reason I do not post videos of myself doing things on YouTube. "Man sets self on fire trying to light pipe" would not be a good watching experience for anyone.

I've repeated this once, now repeated twice: Under three minutes! Five if it's really good. Start off with a bang (jesse's point about the critical first ten seconds.) In other words, edit, edit, review, then edit some more.

Good observation. Like a good pop song, three minutes is enough to make a point and get out with some zing.

Deathmetal, if at all possible, please do try, it would probably be one of the most informative pipesmoking videos ever.
Seriously though, I would love to see some samples of regular old grumpy men just smoking a pipe. There's no way for me to witness something like that in real life, and I have a feeling it would be very good for helping newcomers establish at least a vague concept of what normal pipesmoking is.
