I would be more inclined to watch these video's if they were in HD, had a great soundtrack and the donkey's name was Kelly.
Seriously though, I think it is great that someone takes the time to try and educate other pipe smokers. When I began with my pipes I would have really liked having youtube to help me with things I was doing wrong. I would have saved at least 10 layers of my tongue and a few grand in pipes and tobacco. Just having someone explain how red virginia's could be the cause of my tongue burn would have been helpful. I tried almost every McClelland, Rattray, Ashton, GL Pease, Two Friends and other virginia blends loving the flavors but burning my tongue off.
To the people who make video's, keep going and don't let anyone tell you it is wrong or not helpful, you are doing the pipe community a huge service. And to you people who don't like or rank on video presenters, keep your pie holes shut if you have nothing good to say. Don't make me come over there and bitch slap you. :nana:

I may have to give Royal Yacht another try.
I hope you do. It's awesome. But, it requires slow smoking, or it turns ashy tasting and then the topping clashes with that. I find best results in a wider bowl so it can cook a little, but I think some have recommended smaller bowls.

I think it's important to keep in mind that the primary reason this particular thread received the type of responses it did is simply because of the monstrous wall of words in the OP. If the intent was to garner positive support and interest in the "YTPC", it would have been much more effective to have condensed that treatise into a few sentences along with one or two best examples of his video offerings. IMO, the reaction/responses would have then been very different.

That's a very salient point. It reminded me of what I find annoying in many of the videos that I've sampled. Simply state what you have to say. And I do quit watching and move on if the video feels like filler. The rule is engage within the first 10 seconds, and it's a pretty good rule.
I don't think that the motives of video presenters has been under attack. The quality of what has been presented has been called into question, and that's fair.
Maybe it's a matter of having worked in a business where telling the story to inform and entertain the audience is the goal and people work hard to do that. That means that I look at what I'm doing from the standpoint of how it works for others, not just how it works for me. There's nothing that I do on a show that doesn't go thru critique, revision, critique, and revision (unless I'm really lucky). If it's just something I'm doing for me, then that process is just to benefit me. But if it's for an audience, then it's important to make them the first priority.

In the interest of fairness I just flipped over to watch a YTOC video.
After 70 seconds I flipped over to watch a Truth about Pawn Stars........guess that says it all.

I don’t take the comments here about YT videos, or those that make them, being negative in general but more specifically directed at some of the pipe related videos. While busy with paper work, etc. in my office I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to music videos of orchestras performing classical music all the way to jazz and rock (depending on my mood) as I have a very good sound system hooked to my confuser (that would be what I refer to my computer). It might not be the best sound quality sound as opposed to a good vinyl record as I personally think CD’s suck and will never match the quality of a good vinyl, but that’s a whole other subject and be that as it may.
I’m not going to get into specifics, but over the past few years I’ve found some the YT videos to be quite helpful with certain issues and problems that arise. Granted, there is a plethora of mindless videos posted on YT, and the idiots who post them as opposed to those that have any merit, but it’s simply a matter of each individual separating the chaff from the wheat. To be quite honest I wish I had access to some of the YT videos back in the early 70’s when I first attempted smoking a pipe, but I personally find the YT pipe tobacco reviews and pipe reviews to be senseless and moronic, and more often than not... laughable. But, if anyone finds them useful then by all means indulge yourself.

It's just...why spend 9 minutes talking about accidentally setting fire to your underwear when the topic is supposed to be a tobacco review.
@sable - I don't know, that might be a pretty funny story. Sounds like you have some personal experience with that... care to share. LOL

Think of it as a metaphor.
However...
When I was in college I did once cremate a sizable portion of my once luxuriant long black hair while hunched over, lighting a meerschaum. Should have had my hair pulled back. Burning hair smells like chicken.
Never felt the need to make a video about it.

Self-expression is more important now. It did not happen unless validated by "friends" on Social Media.

And therein lies the difference between professional entertainment and amateur hour.

Now that would have been a great video.

But there is so much of it that somehow the effect is to make it seem less important.
"Alone in a crowd"... true, and insightful as usual.
I'm about to upload a video of me ranting about how cool Royal Yacht is. It's 43 minutes long.

I found the original post to be a nice read, and will probably check out some videos. Hey, if there's pipes and tobacco involved, I'm game... unless it gets weird. Ok, then I still might be game.

It's been over a decade since I've heard someone refer to "Endless September of the Internet". Thanks for that, so many people look at me like I'm crazy if I mention or explain it, I was beginning to wonder if it was a false memory.
