I thought statistically, pipe smokers lived on average five years longer than non-smokers. ???
Never believe what you read. Pipe smokers are too few and in between to do a wide scale statistical study on, not to mention said study would have to takes years of comparison to accomplish. Sounds more like some had better genes than others.

Agreed, the musing that somehow pipe smokers live longer than non-smokers stinks worse than some of my old cobs. It sounds like the wishful thinking to the extreme, better to all be honest with ourselves about the realistic dangers of pipe smoking than deluding ourselves.

I tried smoking a pipe some thirty years ago but never liked it, but I found new interest after walking into a pipe shop and purchasing a churchwarden pipe a week ago. I fired it up today for the first time and at age 64 found I really liked sitting on the porch and smoking this new pipe. Now being a person who has never really smoked I have health concerns due to the fact I may really like this.
I know on YouTube Spurgeon Piper had two interviews: one with a dentist and the other with a doctor. You might find them informative .

I really think the American public has traded down in the "Public Health Crisis" department.

It's not a binary choice, but you don't see the FDA going after the soda and junk food companies when people choose sugar and polyunsaturated fats over having feet and not having to take perpetual insulin shots.

there are carcinogens in tobacco smoke.

But if you choose to smoke there’s less health risk if you don’t inhale.

And if you choose to smoke you’ll become a nicotine slave, and never miss a payment on your sin.

That said all healthy and no sinning May make for a longer but duller life.

I generally agree but would add the caveat " Never believe [100%} of what you read" ... it depends on source and supporting facts. But this is a forum ... I actually got that from another thread discussion wherein someone posted a "study" to back it up. There's a study for everything ! It was meant to be facetious and uplifting ! Since we agree not to trust everything ... I'll just pick those things I like until proven otherwise ! :ROFLMAO: As for the subsequent line of discussion on obesity ... most of those charts haven't been updated since the fifties, the people who came up with them (Hoover-FBI & military) wouldn't have qualified under them and according to the charts I should weigh 156 pounds. I haven't weighed that since fifth grade ! When it was discovered I was diabetic (genetic type II) I lost 75 pounds and my Doctor said I was 'obese' and need to lose weight ... I'm only 27 lbs over their chart ! I hardly call that obese !

I just wanted to pop in and remind everyone that diabetes is not necessarily a choice. My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 a few months before her second birthday. She hadn’t overindulged in candy, by the way. Yes, type 2 can be acquired through bad life choices, but there has been an increase in early life diagnoses of type 1 lately. I see your point, but it’s still a dangerous leap in logic to assume that an increase in diabetes diagnoses is caused solely by fats and sugars being overindulged in by sound-minded adults. Also, for the record, the government has targeted and continues to target those markets, it’s just not “flashy” news like a tobacco ban, so it doesn’t get covered as much. The votes placed on such topics tend to fail miserably though. Remember New York’s soda tax?

Of course not, there is something else going on with Type 1, along with the uptick of other youth illnesses. It's very concerning. Very sorry to hear that about your daughter.

Just trying to make the point that if the "nail in the coffin" for the tobacco companies' was them admitting that not only was their product addictive and not just a "lifestyle choice", but that they were adding impact boosters to increase the chance of addiction even knowing the health outcomes, then you can't really look past what processed food companies are doing. In a lot of ways, it's worse, because it's a distortion and manipulation of something that we all have to do to survive and is in a lot of ways unavoidable.
Try going to a store and find a product that does not contain soybean (or vegetable) oil or high fructose corn syrup.

Maybe we should all just lock ourselves in our house and never leave! Never know if you'll trip out the door and hit your head and die, hit by a distracted driver or attacked by a crazy person. Puree all our food and take extremely small sips incase a choking hazard arises. Wouldn't want to fall asleep incase I never wake up..... See my point. Just live life and enjoy it.
This is essentially saying all risks are equal . But they demonstrateably are not. Most research shows as intake increases so does risk. If you smoke a couple of bowls a week your risk is very low. But smoke 10 or 14 per day as some do your risk is very high.

We are free to choose, thank goodness , but let's not pretend all risks are equal.

My wife tells me pipe smoking is cheaper than a pyschologist and pills, plus I am less grumpy.

Renaldo, pipe smoking is bad for you, please ship your pipes and tobacco to me :)

Renaldo is long gone.. He took a joke too hard a long time ago and melted down.

I do recall the joke being a little out of line, for what it's worth.

Well stated. I’d venture to say it may be harder to quit eating than it is to quit smoking! I appreciate the concern, and hope you and yours are doing well, too. In related news, have you seen the skittles lawsuit yet? There is action being taken, but as we all know, the wheels of progress move slow. Ever forward, but slow nonetheless.
