Evidently more was dropped. I received a notice of availability a couple of weeks ago.
It seems like a pretty good time for pipe smokers working on their cellars, what upsets me is I’m done buying and wouldn’t ya know it, Samual Gawith starts selling more of their plugs on this side of the pond. About 5 years ago, I would have gone nuts over that but I just can’t justify anymore pipe tobacco, maybe as a treat someday every now and again. And even more so for the new smokers, they won’t know what Dunbar used to taste like so if they are getting their hands on it now, they might just enjoy it.

Any news of Tilbury changing? That is one of my favorite Esoterica blends, up there with Dunbar for me. Just a great smoke, no bells and whistles but it hits the spot every time I smoke it.

I still haven’t tried a large part of what they have to offer. When I started smoking they were still relatively easy to get online, especially anything in their line other than Penzance, even Stonehaven was sitting on the shelves for a week or two. Stuff like Peacehaven, Hastings, Blackpool, etc, was always in stock.

The first time I had Tilbury, was like 1-2 years ago, and it was quite the straight blend, if it had that Esoterica thing going on it was so subtle I don’t remember.

But, I just got a tin from the latest drop from KBV, it was according to his site 2021, and this thing really has that fermented fruit vibe going on. To me, it sits in the middle of the recent batches of Dorchester and Dunbar, almost smells as strong. hmm 🤔

In my time on the forum, P&C had to do a promotion of 1 free bag with the purchase of a Big Ben pipe just to get rid of it. The bag of Penzance I got from that deal netted me two tins of Murray's Three Year Matured Virginia from pipestud.

I opened a tin of Tilbury I got from the local B&M a few weeks ago and at first it had a very noticable topping. But now when I open the jar I definitely don't smell it anymore nor does it come through in the smoke.

The famed Stonehaven smell is ethereal at best, barely there. Bummer.

Wow, so Esoterica is dead one way or the other based upon no factual evidence in this thread.
Yes. And worse, the demand for these tobaccos will become even more stressed for no other reason than an epidemic of FOMO. Because this thread seems to go on and on, many will assume it all must be true as evidenced by the maxim, I read it, therefore it must be true.

Exactly. There's no "evidence" other than what long time smokers of these blends, are experiencing when they smoke the latest versions. The evidence is in the taste. Hell, you can take apart the blends and spread out the individual leaf and see it's not the same. Seriously, go do that.

Personally, I'm not going to spend money on buying every blend of the 2020 thru 2022 releases for comparison with earlier versions, but Dunbar is down the toilet, RDF isn't nearly what it was when I was buying it in 2014, but I'll rely on what 's coming back to me from people who've tried some of the other blends that they've smoked for years, and who I know to have really sensitive palates and are well known and respected for them.

And where's the surprise? Changes to components in blends has been going on for the past several years. It's not just Director's Cut, it's a number of the older HU blends and Rattrays' etc made by one of the few conglomerates putting out a bunch of empty brand names. Pick apart the components in the tin between 2018 and now. Complaints over Solani, Wessex Campaign Dark flake, Cabbies Mixture, etc, etc. So all these long time smokers are delusional? You want evidence? Pull out tins from years ago and from now and break down the contents.

Well, if you never smoked their 2020 or earlier releases you won't know the difference, so why worry?

@JimInks and I were talking about this last night and we both think there's a lot of changes happening throughout the blending industry as suppliers disappear, turning to growing other crops, and substitutions get made. Label stays the same, contents not so much

I have been talking to some friends about buying several hundred pounds of various raw leaf before crops dry up , but you’d have to be an insider and have boots on the ground , could be a huge turnover seeing what McCLeland tins go for these days
