There was some speculation, but it was pretty much kept underwraps until the end. And the few people who actually did know weren't talking. It just started disappearing from vendors inventories. But it took several months before it was all sold out. They didn't want a frenzy over product by announcing ahead of time the shutdown.
The McClelland closing? Worst kept secret in the pipe community. I knew about it 5, 6 months before the announcement. I'd get emails about it. I only bought a few things as I was at the tail end of buying, but I did stock up on the 40th. Having advance information on when and where it would ship was a big help.

I never though about this which is a side note. Some blends taste great in moderation. If I haven't had them in a while they're awesome, but I keep smoking them they become very average. I wonder if some of these hard to get blends work under this phenomenon. The rarity forces people to smoke them in a way that makes them more enjoyable.

The truth is, it doesn’t matter how elite something is, wine, champagne, beer, tobacco, etc...

If your tastebuds don’t like it, it doesn’t matter.

This is exactly why I like a large rotation, besides a few blends I’ve been very vocal about, I get bored smoking the same thing again and again. I love Dunbar but if I smoke it regularly, it gets boring just as everything else does but when I break it out from time to time, the first smoke of it is amazing and I always think to myself , “I need to smoke this stuff more”, rinse, repeat.

Esoterica didn't rise to the level it is now until the late 2000s when there was a missed shipment. Up until then it was just another tobacco.

I'm very much the same, though there are occasions when I'll just smoke up a tin. I don't like to have too much open at any given time.
It's been 3 or 4 years since I've smoked Stonehaven. I just don't have any interest in it.

that is so true. Most of the fancier wines I've tried, to my taste buds where worse then the 8 dollar a bottle ones. Though that one Pinot Noir was dangerously tasty. My point was just that if you like something and don't have it all that often it seems to taste even better, which might partially explain the madness with certain blends

ffunny enough I find I really start enjoying a blend when I concentrate on it. But that's with favorites. There are ones I really enjoy only on occasion. A lot of the blunter aromatics are like that for me.

They've got a couple that we're alright but nothing to pay more than retail for.

Same
first mixture 79 is great and probably the most unique blend I've ever smoked. As in I can't suggest it to someone based on the other things they like. It falls into the what else is like it? Just it. And the "do you think I'll like it?" "try it that's the only way to know."
I don't think there is much tobacco wise I would pay more then retail for. Unless all tobacco cost more then retail. Even the best things I've smoked haven't been so much better to me that they're worth more then the higher end of regularly available retail. Especially with how good in my opinion many regularly available blends are.
I have to admit that my perspective on some pipe smokers is that they're searching for some amazing flavor and think that the right tobacco will unlock it. When working on technique and palate will do so much more. I also know there are at least one or two people who buy it because it is expensive. Like the guy who doesn't even know how to smoke a cigar (if you saw them smoke one you'd be perplexed, it's on par with seeing someone who can't figure out how to use a screwdriver), but buys cigars that hit the well known and famously expensive. I bet you can find some people bragging about how they only smoke second hand hard to find blends.

The European Tobacco Products Directive (there is a UK rough equivalent) is a burden that some manufacturers won't be able to meet. Planta sold out to Mac Baren for this stated reason

I know that @gawithhoggarth has devoted major resources- money and management time- to coming into compliance with these regulations. I have no earthly idea what, if anything, Germain has done.

A potentially sensible explanation.

I can see what you mean but, it has way more of a perfume/cologne taste to me. I heard earlier versions of Mix 79 were a lot more heavy on the fragrance. The stuff I tried tasted like sassafras (sarsaparilla) and licorice, bought a pouch in 2016 around the time I joined this forum. Not a bad smoke by any means, just not a favorite of mine, I still don’t get why it’s so polarizing but such is life.
