At my age, I really don’t need a “pipe community“ to keep me happy. However, I do enjoy the smoking tents at Chicago and in Columbus. I also have two local cigar/pipe shops where several of us get together and discuss blends on occasion.

This interview of Master of Pipes, Neal Osborn, by Simon LCS Briars, that was posted yesterday has a slightly different take on how the pipe “community” has helped Neal, a medical doctor. His collection also is incredible.

Good points, but far too much gets assumed about the commonality. I could care less if people want to assume that a community exists, using even the lowest common denominator definition, but when they start ascribing behavior to it that I don’t engage in, or complaining that someone or some entity should or does do something altruistic “for the community”, it sticks in my craw. In case you couldn’t tell.
So, just to muddy the waters and piss off people, something I have a gift for doing, where is it written that all members of a community, even a digital one, are obliged to all agree about everything, or even much of anything?

Even here, in Ashland, people disagree, sometimes vehemently, about what's happening around them. The closest thing to any commonality I can see is a belief that the City Council is made up of idiots. But the reasons behind that assessment vary widely. Yet, these are all members of the same community who are affected by such decisions.

Community can be defined as people who have a shared interest, such as a "scientific" community. We're a community of people interested in pipe smoking.

As much as Wortzel tries to place a positive spin on STD's actions, it doesn't read as positive. And here in the US, the closure of Sutliff, unnecessary as it is, is not the product of the kindness of STD. It's a calculated business decision by a company focused on mass market efficiencies.

But if some people want to see this in a different light, doesn't make them no longer a member of the larger community of pipe smoking enthusiasts, just people with a different view.

Au contraire, there seem to be several commonalities that link the members of our community...for example, allegiance to the authority of jiminks; lockstep disapproval of [company] that then turns to lockstep mourning of [company]; the ability to find a reason to complain about the decline in quality of every tobacco blend including those released for the first time just a week ago... 😁

You left out pedantry!

Well, now you’ve pissed me off.

I guess I see “community” as more than commonality. I feel there needs to be some reliance, some interdependency. Codependence, and not in a good way. And…can you involuntarily be a member of a community? Can you resign? Can you compel other community members to do shit for you? What exactly are your obligations, anyways? And what about membership cards and t-shirts?

When are all of you going to get your ass in gear and build me a Community Center?

C’mon! Do it for The Community!

(Are we a cult yet?)

"To be in the community but not of it!" 😁

Maybe the reference to incense in my username gives it away but I have no issue with the right sort of cult...I wonder if I can get "Pipe Cultist" as a member title someday.

It's like the kid that tried too hard to fit in. They see inclusion where none exists.

All you have to do is request that title once you have sufficient posts and time on the forum.
