But apparently Sutliff had no idea how to market the line, so they started sending out samples to pipe clubs. Brilliant idea, except they didn’t send one or two tins, they sent dozens. Flooded the market with free tobacco.
They would send boxes of the stuff every month to the cigar bar where our pipe club met. Nobody wanted it. The restaurant was getting pissed because they didn't know what to do with all of it.

Regardless of just how high an opinion we might have of ourselves, and no matter how much influence we think PM has over the pipe tobacco industry, the Sutliff Naysayers had nothing to do with it's closure. Zero. If STG could buy C&D, they'd close them, too.
They're openly ridiculed and reviled too, though.

Openly reviled and ridiculed? Links please.
You would have to go back quite a ways. Once the extent of Sutliff's activities began to get revealed, like making blends for Peretti and other premium labels, including the fact that they supplied their "inferior" tobacco to McClelland, the detractors largely shut the fuck up.

C&D? They used to be reviled here. They've upped their game in recent years and found a niche that works well for them. Plus, they're almost your only date for the prom.
While I'm not a big fan, they make a few blends that I really like and have cellared poundage.

I've only seen that on occasion. Excluding that their parent company is a sponsor here, many of us on here were friends with Craig Tarler and his wife and for many years ordered directly from them. They'd even custom make blends and/or press any of their blends into one pound bricks upon request.

yeah that was my hope =[]
but just incase.... i think i have 37 tins.
Better enjoy them while still fresh. All of the 2016 tins and pouches of St Bruno that I bought were pretty dead when I tried them last year. Whatever flavorings MacBaren used had no staying power. The Ogden's version flavorings were solid for decades.

I have one of the old sealed plastic trays of the flake left. Will be interesting to see the topping difference between 20 years and 5 years
20 years will be the Ogden's product. The base tobaccos in the Ogdens version always struck me as richer and deeper in flavor than MacBaren's.

Denmark is the country where English brands go to die.
