Spent some time talking to one of the employees during a tour a few years ago. Sutliff had scooped him up from a cigar business and between that and Sutliff he had worked in tobacco for about thirty-five years. Hope he has found work or been able to retire.

An awful lot of tears for a brand that's been openly reviled and ridiculed on this site alone for years. I've seen new guys here and elsewhere say they'd never buy Sutliff because of what they've read online. What did anyone imagine was going to happen to the company?

Regardless of just how high an opinion we might have of ourselves, and no matter how much influence we think PM has over the pipe tobacco industry, the Sutliff Naysayers had nothing to do with it's closure. Zero. If STG could buy C&D, they'd close them, too.

This, the umpteenth iteration of the heralding of doom, nevertheless still made me sad. Sutliffe will be missed. Mac Baren as well, but I think Sutliffe had a better corporate personality.

I am still wondering how bad STG is going to fuck up the surviving blends.

Clearly there are parallel timelines in place. On Monday 3/4, some of us will be out of luck. On Tuesday 3/4, those of us on the good timeline will be living off the fat o’ the land, ordering Sutliff galactic sludge like Mocha Strips with free shipping for even one ounce orders. Maybe even a free pipe nail. There will be free things, that’s the point. Sorry to all you Monday 3/4ers.
