Colored Stems

Generally speaking, I hate 'em too. Especially on meerschaums, which should always be amber. (Just my opinion, delicados. Exactly worth spit.)

Amber looks really good on a meerschaum.
My favourite though, are the deep ruby coloured stems that looks so good against the white.

Any amber, ruby, or shade in-between, look even better as a meerschaum starts to colour with use.

Certain coloured stems look really good on a briar pipe. [No, not pastel]


There was a pipe maker that sold a range of their pipes with two stems, one black the other coloured. [Sorry, can't recall the brand but think they were NOS from years ago. Saw them on Fleabay]
An excellent idea even for the spare stem alone.

Not a fan of a white stem.
There was another pipe that came with a standard sized stem and a Churchwarden stem. [the black stem in the add is 1.7" longer than the white. Semi-Churchwarden?]
I'm not entirely sure but it might also have also been a Stanwell.

Juma is another option. A wide range of colors with the softness of vulcanite without the oxidation.

I have quite a few pipes with colored stems. When I replace a stem on a pipe, I strongly consider something other than black. It is like Getty’s whole new pipe.

i Love fun colors on stems. Not hokey looking, done right accents the pipe. There are some creative folk out there making some cool stuff. However I’m too lazy at the moment to add pictures

I ended up with the red and black one. I hope someone here got the Green. i loved that green, but there were a few hiccups on the first version and the awesome dude who made it, made it again when he sensed it wasn’t perfect. The red and black is very cool and subtlety classy.

I like my coloured stems on these. It provides a beautiful contrast against the natural briar.

Colored stems do not bother me one bit. I think it adds as much to a pipes personality as the shape, grain, or stain does.

Personally, colored stems always have an appeal. I have red, amber, yellow and white ones. Most likely will add green and blue to the collection. A little color variation never hurts.

Wow I never knew vulcanite came in any other color but black. Maybe my Jared Coles really does have a vulcanite stem, it’s red and black swirl so I thought it was acrylic lol.

Is there an easy way to tell what material a stem is made from?

The pink part of dentures were vulcanite until WW2 which made rubber supplies troublesome.

Some carvers even go so far as to incorporate gemstones in the pipe's design.
