I think we ran out of plugs to discuss that were still in production...No one mentioned the Century line of plugs. They dont have great reviews but there are also very few reviews so its hard to tell.

To get the thread back on its rails (maybe)

Has anyone smoke the Century Plugs?

Tried a couple of their crumble cakes but didn't get on with them. Liked the taste but not the way they smoked. Couldn't get any pull from them no matter how I packed them.

I love these Japanese Higonokami friction folders, they’ve been made by the same family for many generations and have a beautiful Damascus blade. They make them in varying sizes and do a paper steel blade too which I need (I should say want, I certainly don’t need more knives, I don’t need more pipes either but I know I’m not gonna stop buying them) anyway I thoroughly recommend them for those that like a good blade. image.jpg

I've got a #7 Carbone that I've neglected for too long. I'll have to pull that back out and sharpen it. As far as pocket knives go I don't think you could do better. My favorite knife overall is my Morakniv 106.
In the winter I do most of my smoking in my wood shop, and my Morakniv 106 is what I reach for to cut plugs. My choice plugs are GH Dark Plug and SG RB. I have a dwindling stash of Cob Plug that I dip into at Christmas time.

I’d heard of Morakniv but had to look up the 106, I’m whittling a chess set and that looks like a damn good blade for that sort of work and you can just buy the blade alone which is very cool. Would you recommend them?

I know that wasn't directed to me but with chess pieces being so tiny, I think the 106's 3" blade is overkill. I carve my pipes with Moraknives so I've got recommendations for you...

Morakniv Eldris Fixed-Blade... Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWQHFGZ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Morakniv 120 Carbon Steel... Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09JJ8HRBH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Mikisyo Hamono Power grip Chisels... Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0098TQ5HG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Also, if you don't already have a pair, I can't recommend Maxiflex cut resistant gloves highly enough. Perfect breathability and maneuverability.

I love that Eldris, unfortunately they’re not on Amazon UK but I can probably get it direct from the manufacturer. I’m set for quality gloves and chisels but I imagine I’ll need more soon as those tiny carbon steel blades wear down pretty quickly. I’m making a very unconventional chess set, I’m basing the pieces on medieval gargoyles and characters from illuminated scripts and no two are alike, including the pawns. Thank you for the links 🙏

Here is my Plug Knife and Block. Red Oak(from the same slab the benchtop is made from)

image0.jpeg
I didn't have a plug in any of my jars, I sliced and smoked them all. Some C&D Pirate Cake stands in for plug reference.

This knife is really perfect for it. It has an asymmetric grind and the flat blade keeps it in contact with the plug. I put a longer than necessary handle in it from a red oak tobacco stick I had laying around..... I still use the knife to cut foot with from time to time.

The current production is something in between a crumble cake and a humongous flake. I like to break off pieces and then slice them in half before rubbing out.
Was going to say, I just smoked some that I purchased last year (no production date on the tin, so I labeled it '2022') and it is a crumble kake. I suppose you brought it out as a prop for the photo, but it caught me off guard. Thanks for the clarification.
