Alrighty when my pipe gets here I'd like to know how to get her broken in right. I've googled it searched the forums everyone seems to have a different idea on what to do. Should I just fill it up and smoke really slow? Do the one third full then the two thirds and then finally full? Everyone seems to think there is only one way to do this. I can't figure out what to do and i'd like to be smoking my first pipe when I'm 50 still =D And do you break in corn cobs? Lol sorry for all the posts lately!

You are going to get tons of info. Info from people far more experienced than me. I say load up, don't pack to tight, and smoke up. You will get a feel of what works for you.

Ok corncobs do have a break in time, but it doesnt matter, its short maybe 3 smokes, just stuff it and puff it. For briar, I have tried the fill up and go slow, the honey trick and the thirds trick. I really think the thirds is the best, it will put a char on the bottom that is hard to get with the other methods. Thats my 2 cents.
On how to do that, I fill it one third, (fill it to the top loose and pack it down) and smoke it slow to the bottom, if you need to dump ash out to burn all the tobacco, do it. Do that about 6 times, then do two thirds (fill it to the top loose then pack it down...twice) and do that 6 times, then fill it to the top and repeat all the same stuff. Easy enough.
Do what you want to do though, thats just what ive had the most luck with. Also bowls that are pre carbed dont need anything special, just smoke them

I second what dervis says. I once tried the 1/3, 2/3, full thing. I just got frustrated with it, so I loaded it up, not to tight and smoked it. People go on about the thirds stuff to help build a cake in a controlled fashion. The cake will grow all by its self, you just need to smoke. Enjoy. :puffy:

Load and smoke. Cake will come naturally. If you're worried about cake at the bottom do 1/3 bowls for a while, then 2/3 bowls, then full bowls. If you don't, or can't smoke to the bottom of the bowl then there's no need for cake down there. The only purpose of cake is to make the smoking experience dryer and cooler.
Cobs technically go through a "break in" period. But that's just what some call the first few bowls because they can taste the cob flavor that it contributes to the smoke. I can't taste it. Load that thang up and smoke it.
With time you'll develop your own rules. It's like telling someone how to sing in the shower. Yes there are very pretty and proper ways to sing that poduce great results... but if you like what you're singing in the shower then get you sing on. 8)

I typically do the 1/3, 2/3, full method. Usually I'll bring it to work for a week or two and smoke it like that (1/3 or 2/3) on my lunch break. Then in the evenings when I have plenty of time I pull out a different pipe and load up. Works for me, but spartan nailed it. Find out what you prefer and do that!

I have to second what nsfisher said. Just put baccy in and smoke it. As you smoke, cake will form where you need it based on your smoking style. If you smoke the bowl all the way to the bottom the cake will naturally form the whole way down. Just remember to not let the pipe get too hot while smoking.

Load that puppy up with a good Burley based blend, (I find Carter Hall works great) and you'll have a cake started in no time.

When I break in a new pipe, I fill her all the way to the top with Tobacco and smoke the heck out of it. Once I have smoked it down to the ash, I cover the bowl with my palm and shake it for a few seconds. Shaking it will cause the ash to evenly coat the bowl, which will help in forming your layer of carbon AKA cake. Once you are done shaking just empty out your ash. I will smoke the pipe like such the first few smokes and then you should be well on your way to having a good broken in pipe......

+1 on what everyone else said.
And don't fret. When I first started I was also worried about my first real pipes. Nowadays, I load em up loosely, maybe not all the way to the brim, smoke em slowly. When done, I do the "thumb on top and shake" thing. Run cleaner through after smoking. After about half a dozen bowls, it's coated good enough and I just have at it.
I do dedicate pipes to aros vs non-aros (mostly VaPer).
Good luck

I'm with mark, put some Carter Hall in that puppy and smoke it! I have never done anything past making sure the bowl stays cool during the first few smokes from a new pipe. Never had any issues to this day with a cake or over heating, so I'd say it boils down to personal preference.

What's the honey trick?
