Had some Sir Walter Raleigh in a clay cutty last night and broke down and dipped into my 2013 Christmas Cheer on the weekend in a Rattray's Butcher's Boy Sandblast.
I've probably got about 10-12 Petersons including my latest, an Arklow sandblasted in the 408 shape. Peterson offer a quality pipe in a variety of shapes though I would suggest a through inspection before you buy at the straightness of their drilling has somewhat declined in quality lately.
I use about a 3/4” piece of shrink tubing on my clays. Easy on, tight fit and comfortable. Never thought to try it on my other pipes but thinking about it now.
I prefer a larger pipe or cob for my arros. I have a huge Chacom horn that is great for arros. Fishing I reach for my Devil's egg cob or a big meer that I've smoked the hell out of.
Yellow or white is purely cosmetic. If you're looking for a meer then what you need to look out for is the pipe block or pressed. A block meer is carved from a solid block of meerschaum where some of the lesser quality pipes are leftovers that are ground into a powder and mixed with epoxy and...
Slightly lower then the brim. I live in Saskatchewan where the wind is always blowing so if I pack to the brim when I light it it expands and blows ash everywhere. lol
I am a VaPer lover and my favs are......
Beacon Extra
Escudo
Chenet's Cake
St James Flake
Top Hat
Bayou Morning
De Luxe Navy Rolls
Luxury Bullseye Flake
You can't go wrong with any of these for a good perique experience.
Say La Vie ?♂️ If it was good enough for Hef then who am I to judge. I still enjoy the odd edderdale flake when I want to reminisce about how my grandma's handbag smelled..... and for the continuation of the tread I enjoy smoking it in a Zenith ceramic zulu shape.
I thought Mixture 79 was the new McClellands?!? Have I been away to long?!? Speaking of which, my hiatus did allow my cellar to age nicely, I just cracked a tin of 2013 Christmas Cheer to share with a new piper that had never smoked anything but Captain Black. Was a great day of fishing and...
Lol fell off the (or on?) the wagon for a bit and switched to cigars for a spell. Otherwise I've just been gettin older and crankier. lol How have you been?
I don't really pay much attention to "The Rules". I smoke the tobacco that suits my fancy that day in what I feel like smoking it in. I like a smaller pipe for virginias.... why? Cause a single flake fits nicer in a smaller bowl then a bigger bowl. I like aromatics in a bigger bowl. Why? Cause...
G.L.Pease did a great article a while back about his preference for pairing shapes to tobaccos that I thought was very informative.

For me I smoke my virginias generally in a smaller cutty or billiard, perique blends sing best to me in a mid sized volcano or...
I have a few of both, high and low end pipes, and to me the biggest difference is in the fine tuning. The lower the price of the pipe the "sloppier" the care in the fit and finish. Gaps between the stem and bit, coating spilled into the bowl, shapes slightly out of round etc. are visual...
Most of my pipes are small.... 2's to small 3's..... but I have one chacom horn that is huge. 7-8" in length and the chamber is 1" by 2". I save that for long drives where I roll out a couple flakes, fill it up, and enjoy a 1 1/2 to 2 hr smoke.
Any tobacco will color a meer but I've heard that a goopy Arro will color faster then anything else. Personally I've found that Virginias color just fine but I also do regular bees wax baths on my meers which speeds up coloring as well. Also try not to get them to hot during a smoke as that will...
Pick up a tin at my local B&M and its only my second crumble cake. The first was C&D Blockade Runner. I should have dried it out a little more but took a chuck, crumbled it up and loading a thin wall Chacom Dublin for the drive home. Took a little to get it to stay lit (little to moist) but once...
My aromatic is half 1Q and half Sutliff D-40 Vanilla..... I call it "Fat Bastard" while my go-to daily is 75% Red Cake mixed with 25% perique and it's called "Steak Sauce".
