    I prefer shorter pipes and never noticed a difference between lighting one of my nosewarmers or my regular pipes. What kind of lighter are you using?

    I tried that but didn't work for me. I'd fill a half bowl and think "Hmmmm that doesn't look like much?" so I'd add a little more, then a little more, and next thing I knew I had a full bowl again. Now I just buy smaller pipes, group 1 or 2, I have larger pipes that will come out for road trips...

    First time smoking my pipe in public.

    I smoke in public often and never get comments that are negative but I'm also 6'4 and 300lbs and possess what my wife calls "resting axe-murderer face". I have gotten many thumbs up or smiles, a few inquisitive questions, and some nice comments like "My Grandpa smoked a pipe."

    Cobs are considerable lighter then most briars. I'm also a clencher and I find that shorter pipes work much better for me. I also smoke predominately meerschaum pipes which also tend to be lighter weight.

    Philtpads

    I used to use the Philopads at the bottom of my meers to assist in colouring. Didn't really notice a change in the smoke itself as now I use brass "buttons" and have the same overall effect. I have a pack of the Nording Keystones but haven't tried them out yet.
