What does your outdoor thermostat read this morning?

C'mon out west for the winter; the worst temps we see in Vancouver are around -10c, however today is a balmy 6c. Lots of rain, mind you.

I am Having an Issue With Pipe Flotsam

A good tip given to me when I first dove into pipe-smoking after a decade and a half of nails was to actually count a cadence between puffs. It doesn't take long before the slower pace becomes habitual, and you won't have to keep the cadence, so to speak. Paper filters are single use, if used at...

Can you recommend any good conditioner for pipe?

I use Obsidian Stem Oil on my vulcanite, as I tend to smoke in the elements a fair amount. I've found that with Obsidian, my stems don't discolour in the sun, nor do I end up with "polka-dots" of discolouration if I venture out into the rain; both of which I can't say about the EVOO. If I come...

Stick Them With the Pointy End! Or Ends, Rather!

Both will come in a couple of years - but for now, I think the knife is the way to go. At ten, I don't trust that he would take the time to properly clean a pipe after each smoke, and I want him to learn this hobby properly my sister would likely murder me if I gave him a pipe; and he still...

    Historical question

I know that many a tobacconist of old in London featured a small gas-light which customers and passers-by could light their pipes. I wouldn't be suprised if Public Houses offered the same. Of course, the classic ember from the fireplace works very well...especially in a 16th century clay!

Stick Them With the Pointy End! Or Ends, Rather!

My nephew's birthday is coming up, and I have been pondering buying him a Swiss Army Knife. Finding myself with a couple of minutes to kill, I headed over to the Wenger website to research into the different models. Now, I love gagets as much as the next man, but I have to say, this is overkill...

    Something to Think About

That's how it goes here in North America Aussielass; even here in Canada with our gun-control legislation. With so many small and isolated communities, hunting is a necessary way of life for many of us. I was given a .22 for my 12th birthday, and sent off (with my pops) to learn to hunt. Of...

    Wonderful News From Frank

Glad to hear he is doing well; great news indeed! Thank you for the updates John!

Do You Like a Fast Car?

To add to that seven-figure MSRP, the cost to run a Veyron is ridiculous. A simple service - you know, the one you need to have performed every 10,000km or three months - will run you around $21,000USD. You have to replace the tires a minimum of yearly, and of course, they are not just any set...

Grilled Stuffed Trout Wrapped in Bacon

I have other recipies for making trout candy...Schmitz Bitz (my forum handle) comes from Schmitz Bitz Smoked Seafood Products (BC1906PP); my first company. Speaking of which, it is just about time for me to bust the smokers out of storage for a couple of runs. Thinking I might play around with...

McClelland Three Oaks Syrian or Balkan Sasieni would also fit the bill.

    Crash and Burn!

I like to include a full faring and windscreen as part of safety gear. Back in day, my father and I used to ride every other year in the Three Flags Classic; for those who don't know, it is a trip that runs North/South along the continent yearly; headed South one year, and North the next. One...

Did anybody get dinged yet on the new shipping laws?

I've had two orders come across the line properly declared as tobacco since the changes; one with UPS, the other with Canada Post. The order that came via Canada Post was declared a gift, and did get dung, however the order that came up with UPS was declared a sample, and did not. The funny...

Mailing Tobacco to Canada - Applicable Regulations Jan. 2012

The easiest way to lodge an appeal is when the package is delivered...if you pull oft the CBSA Bill of paying, there are instructions on the back. Conversely, you can refuse delivery, and note to the postal carrier you wish to appeal the charges. They will make the appropriate notations on the...

Mailing Tobacco to Canada - Applicable Regulations Jan. 2012

Nope, I didn't; the new regs didn't go into effect until January 1st - prior to that up to 200g could be sent as a gift duty free (although you would often have to appeal the charge with CBSA).

Mailing Tobacco to Canada - Applicable Regulations Jan. 2012

Oddly, I've noticed the opposite...the two packages I've received since the changes in legislation arrived in record time, one dinged and one not (both properly declared). As for packages going out, I can't say; I've only sent three since January 1, and they only went out last Friday. I am...

Mailing Tobacco to Canada - Applicable Regulations Jan. 2012

Technically, one could receive (up to) 1kg of tobacco, however there are two issues that one could run into. 1) Duty: Canadian duty on a kilo of tobacco would be insane. A 50g tin with a value of $8.00 runs me $17.73 in duties...on a kilo, I would be looking at somewhere around $3,500. 2) The...

Mailing Tobacco to Canada - Applicable Regulations Jan. 2012

Lately, a few people have had issues trading tobacco with those of us north of the 49th. This is due to changes in the Canada/U.S. border agreement; and Canada Post/CBSA failing to properly inform people of the applicable regulations. Currently, the following legislation is what applies: From...

Is there a doctor in the house ?

Not a doctor, but I would be seeing one jiffy quick if I was having chest pains. Not worth it to screw around man...
