    Wierd Truck Stop Happening

Sad, but completely unsurprising given our propensity to ignore the plight of strangers (unless they are presented to us on the six-o'clock news, of course). We've trained ourselves to look the other way when we see an addict passed out on a bench or a hooker on the corner in a seedy...

    Sam Gawith 2012 Jubilee Blend

Sounds like something I would enjoy - here's to hoping we see some on this side of the pond soon!

What do you do to your pipe?

I follow the advice Cortez offers (in fact, I am pretty sure it was one of his posts from which I built my regimen); however I differ in the paper-towel trick. I prefer to use copy-paper, and utilize this method to maintain an even cake after the break-in. I also like to get into the mortise...

    Do It Yourself Tobacco Press?

Funny you should ask this Spartan, I built a "do it yourself" press last night, hoping to put it through the paces starting tonight. My design was quite simple; took a couple of bar clamps and welded them to a heavy steel plate as a base. Then welded plates to both the top and bottom jaws...

Brigham System with Star. Need Help Dating It.

NS, I know I've found some documentation on "Brigham System" pipes somewhere - scouring the dregs of the net for you now. Just out of curiosity, is it a true "system" pipe with a well, like a Pete system; or is it the "Brigham System" rock-maple filter?

What are the best vanilla + the best maple baccys have you ever tried?

When I get a hankering for Vanilla / Maple, I turn to one of the few Canadian tobaccos I keep on hand, Brigham's (Mr. B's) Vanilla / Maple. I find the tobacco flavours (Black and Gold Cav., Burley, and blended Va's I would guess) can still be found through the casing; and the aromatic flavours...

Pictures: Fresh Off the Artisan's Workbench

Very nice Marm4lade; I'm envious (but you knew that already).

    Ideas - what works - mortise/shank cleaning

I use a shank-brush dipped in a bit of alcohol on the really stubborn goop (ok, so I actually use a nylon bore-brush from a gun cleaning kit, somewhat easier to find in my town).

    Gonna be a dad....

Congradulations! Being a dad is pretty much the highlight of my day, every day. Buster's advice is excellent; and although you will be innundated with tips over the next nine odd months, here are a couple that I wish someone had told me before my boy was born. 1) Take a couple of candy-bars into...

    Post yer guitar pictures!

Here is my latest acquisition; a 1981 Larrivee (formerly Quebec, Ca. mfg; currently Vancouver, B.C. mfg.) neck-through-body. Picked her up from a pawnshop for $60; guy obviously didn't do his research - Larivee electrics are extremely rare and high value; particularly the neck through body...

    Horror Photos on Cigarette Packs

Arise from the dead, ye thread of auld! I popped into the corner-store to grab a pack of butts, and much to my dismay, was met with this new size, new format warning:

I'll never buy a red pipe again

I have a Brigham that used to suffer from the same malady; I tossed her into a bucket of isopropyl (99%) overnight with the intention of stripping and restaining her, but found that the alcohol soak both removed the excess stain, and seemed to set the colour nicely. YMMV, but it worked for me -...

    Post yer guitar pictures!

Uber; check out "Bass Tabulature"; it's a very simple way of writing music for stringed instruments. Basically, it will display four lines of music with a series of numbers - each line corrosponds to a string; and each number a fret. As for tuning; there are lots of sites on the net, several...

    Don't friend Tonymacolo

Ohin, no offense was intended, I was trying to make a joke - not so much based on your name nor heritage (well, I suppose loosely as the "Mafia" is a minor part of Italian/Italian-American history...although I still would have made the same wisecrack were you Ugandan or Inuit); but rather on the...

    Don't friend Tonymacolo

But...hey! And here I thought you were going to come burn down my cellar and break all my tenons if I didn't pay-up! Well, don't expect this months *gift*, "Don Ohin" (if that is your real name...I feel like I just don't know any more...). :?

    Gas Prices Getting Ridiculous!

Dervis, what year Ram have you got, and how is it in terms of milage? I've heard the V8 Hemi gets better milage than the 4.7l V8 in my '03 Dakota, and with the wifes car paid off next month, its very conceivable that I will upgrade pretty quick.

    Gas Prices Getting Ridiculous!

Just filled my truck; paid $1.40 per liter - or, for you U.S. folk, $5.31 per gallon. There is something wrong when I have to complete two transactions just to fill my tank (the pay-at-the-pump option will give you a maximum of $100 per). What are you all paying (for regular)?

Day 2 of my new adventure...

Paul; might I suggest investing in a cheap pipe-stand? You can rest your pipe on pretty much any flat surface without concern.

Savanili 320 : Flake or Loss Tobacco

Welcome to the boards, and the world of pipe-smoking Wasim. Well some shapes do indeed lend themselves to smoking flake type tobacco, it is really all a matter of personal preference. I prefer flakes in narrow, deep chambers; while with loose tobacco (ribbon cuts) I often gravitate towards wide...
