    Tobacco tax

Canada works out to around 300%...but I think Aussies (and Kiwis) have it the worst, somewhere around 600% from what I understand.

An introduction, some thoughts, and questions from a new smoker.

Some excellent videos and information about how to pack, and properly light, smoke and care for your pipes can be found in the links on the left. In a nutshell, however, I like to follow the advice passed to the member tiltjp by his father, long before I was a glimmer in my fathers eye. I figure...

Think Before You Join Other Forums

I think we *all* need to calm down and light a pipe. It's just not worth it to expend our energy on petty BS; as they say, haters gonna hate. A (very) wise man once told me: Bob and Paul have their reasons for leaving - even if you or I don't agree with them, is it really our place to shoot...

    Room note or white noise?

It does sound like you've over-extended your palate, although it's very odd that it lasts several days. You might try adding a palate cleansing routine to your smoking - when I am sampling a blend for review, I keep the following on hand to refresh both olfactory and tastebuds, utilizing them...

Refinishing a Chacom smooth black briar??

Topd; thats a great trick - works on stems with bite-marks too (although you may want to use a soldering iron rather than a clothes iron for finer work). tpicking; I would suggest looking for a micromesh kit, I found one at Lee Valley Hardware for less than $10 with an assortment of pads between...

Refinishing a Chacom smooth black briar??

To remove old finish, my preferred method is to actually submerge the entire bowl in Isopropyl Alcohol for several hours, then remove and lightly scrub (or sand, depending on how much stain I want to pull out) the surface. I may repeat this a dozen times until I get the effect I need. Seeing as...

    Genuine Ivory pipe help

That's what I thought Lonestar, but then I saw Tokers warning and had to wonder! Edit: Turned to Google, and discovered this: *From a company that manufactures soapstone fireplace mantles and counter-tops. - no affiliation, of course!*

    Genuine Ivory pipe help

Not to hijack the thread, but what happens to soapstone pipes? I've never heard about moisture having a negative effect, and have been considering plying flame to an old "peace pipe" (circa about 1830) with some N. Rustica a friend grew - but if I am going to destroy it, I'll skip the experience.

Canadians and mail order tobacco from the US

Steyshrek; this question is on every Canadians mind. I've received orders containing several pounds of tobacco (well beyond the 1kg maximum limit for import w/o licence) and not been dung. Conversely, I've received orders containing a single tin and been dung eighteen bucks. We used to be...

Altadis Dunhill Early Morning Pipe & Elizabethian Mixture

papipeguy, I have indeed smoked (and enjoyed) both, although I prefer the Elizabethan like VaPer Golden Age. In fact, I liked it so much, it's the blend I most recently reviewed for the main-page.

Frustrated - Local B&M - Local brand= twice the price in the US

For the Canucks (I'm bored, did some research) Canadian Loose-Cut Tobacco Tax Rates for 2011; calculated per gram Federal: $0.05785 British Columbia: $0.185 Alberta: $0.20 Saskatchewan: $0.21 Manitoba: $0.215 Ontario: $0.1235 Quebec: $0.1060 New Brunswick: $0.1374 Nova Scotia: $0.20...

Frustrated - Local B&M - Local brand= twice the price in the US

I tend to take a different approach; I buy the majority of my tobacco in the U.S. (other than a couple of select Brigham blends - King St. Anniversary in particular, that stuff is sublime - but I digress); but pay the premium for pipes in Canada. I can usually talk to retailer down a few bucks...

Sutliff Private Stock Golden Age Tobacco Review

Bigvan - sorry, that was me, not Kevin...I wrote, edited, and submitted a trio of reviews in rather short order (took my time smoking and writing notes; but slacked off when it came to actually compiling something). By the time I got around to Golden Age, I was running low on variations on the...

Upcoming Changes to Duty Free Limit into Canada (General Goods)

Yeah, I was surprised too, usually the releases on budget day have me shaking my head - but this, combined with the abolution of the penny in the Fall has made me one happy camper! Now if only we can get them to abolish our ridiculous tobacco taxes...

    Mega Millions Question

To answer Puffy's original (and rhetorical) question; 800 x 50ml jars (66.666 flats), or 400 x 100ml jars (33.333 flats) - give or take, based on 2oz per 50ml. Good luck, and I want a picture of that cellar! 8O

Upcoming Changes to Duty Free Limit into Canada (General Goods)

Remember; tobacco is still subject to the tobacco act, and therefore has a weight limit as well as a dollar value imposed. The weights have not changed - however the increase in dollar value means we can now actually bring back the full 200g without incurring duties. The biggest impact will be...

Upcoming Changes to Duty Free Limit into Canada (General Goods)

Not sure if the other Canucks have heard the good news, but the dollar limit on general goods designated "duty-free" coming into Canada is being increased from $50 CAD to $200 CAD after a 24h absence from the country (seems we are still going to be limited to $20 grace for consumables on...

    My New Brigham

Very nice; another big fan of the Brighams (thats an Algonquin in my profile pic, actually). I do the same as the sleepy one due to laziness - perhaps I'll make a concerted effort to try washing the filters and see if it makes a difference (unless, of course, there is something good on TV...).

    Balkan Sasieni and Balkan Sobranie

And, to answer you second question, yes - Balkan Sobranie Original Mixture is being produced for Arango by Germain. You can read my review of it here; but I would also suggest you read this article by Gregory Pease.
